Yasumichi Sawatari's roadside detour notes

Before eating, take a moment to check your onward route and opening hours.

Yasumichi Sawatari sees Aioi as a small base for resetting on the long Route 240 drive. After parking, quickly check the restroom, meal hours, Kumayaki wait, and distance to your next destination. Then choose whether to have juwari soba, buy tofu, or walk to the railway park; a relaxed stop can still be efficient.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Aioi, on National Route 240 in southern Tsubetsu, is a convenient rest stop before or after a trip toward Lake Akan Onsen or Kushiro. Highlights are the original Kumayaki, bear-shaped cakes that can draw queues for fresh batches; juwari soba made entirely from Mashu buckwheat and spring water; and handmade tofu passed down over the years. Add adjacent Aioi Railway Park and Shigechan Land, a few minutes away by car, for a visit that goes beyond food.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Kumayaki turns a rest stop into a destination

These bear-shaped baked cakes draw people willing to wait for fresh batches on weekends and holiday breaks. Even without a meal, adding one Kumayaki to a restroom stop gives you a distinct taste of Aioi.

02

100% buckwheat soba and handmade tofu make food choices easy

The dining area centers on juwari soba, made entirely with Mashu buckwheat and spring water from the Akan mountains. The shop features tofu and atsuage, thick fried tofu, made from its own soy milk. Decide whether soba, tofu, or Kumayaki is today's main attraction rather than wandering the whole shop without a plan.

03

Walk to Aioi Railway Park beside the former station

The adjacent Aioi Railway Park preserves the former JNR Kitami-Aioi Station setting, including a station building and restored railcars. It is a short look around and a chance for children or companions to stretch their legs during a long drive.

04

A food and sightseeing gateway into Tsubetsu from the Kushiro side

The stop is about 25 minutes from Lake Akan Onsen and connects onward toward Kitami and Abashiri. If pressed for time, park, use the restroom, and have a sweet snack. With more time, continue to Shigechan Land, Mori Tsubetsu, or Tsubetsu Pass for a half day in eastern Hokkaido.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short stop en route toward Lake Akan or Kushiro

A 30-minute sweet snack and restroom break

After parking, use the restroom first and check the wait for Kumayaki. If it is ready, take one as a car snack; if the queue is long, look at tofu and souvenirs in the shop before deciding. Even without a full meal, you can take a taste of Aioi along.

Parking → Restroom → Kumayaki House → Shop → Depart

Fresh batches can mean a wait on weekends and holiday breaks. If your next appointment is close, keep another option besides a sit-down meal.

A drive on National Route 240 around lunchtime

Make 100% buckwheat soba your lunch

For lunch here, make the juwari soba made with Mashu buckwheat the main event. Follow it with Kumayaki or soy-milk products to take away, covering lunch and shopping in one stop.

Dining area → Shop → Kumayaki → Aioi Railway Park

Dining-area hours vary by season, weekday, and last order. Check official information before setting out for a late lunch.

Families with primary-school children, adults on a detour, and photography fans

Make Aioi memories through rail history and art

After a break at the roadside station, walk through neighboring Aioi Railway Park and, if time allows, go on to Shigechan Land. The Kumayaki design connects with local art, giving you more to talk about than a sweet snack alone.

Roadside station → Aioi Railway Park → Shigechan Land

Shigechan Land opens seasonally and has several weekly closure days. Check its season and days before making it your destination.

Rainy or cold days and the return from Lake Akan

Add a hot spring visit at Mori Tsubetsu

When a long outdoor walk is unappealing, eat and shop at the roadside station, then rest at Mori Tsubetsu's day-use onsen hot spring. The route runs through forest; allow extra driving time and watch road conditions in winter or toward evening.

Roadside station → Lamp no Yado Mori Tsubetsu → Return journey

Last admission for day-use bathing can change. Check the facility's latest notice when the hot spring is your goal.

Early mornings and clear weather from June through October

Continue to Tsubetsu Pass in the clear-weather season

For views of the sea of clouds and Lake Kussharo, use the roadside station as a food and restroom stop before heading to Tsubetsu Pass. Higher elevation brings changeable weather, so eat and use the restroom before climbing.

Roadside station → Tsubetsu Pass Observatory → Mori Tsubetsu area

The observatory has a limited opening season and weather-related safety restrictions. Check the live camera and town information before deciding.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works best for a restroom stop and brief shopping.

This is not a station with a large indoor play area. Check on site or through official information for nursing and diaper-changing facilities, and plan to keep dining and shopping brief.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Kumayaki and a short walk at the former station offer a change of pace.

A long wait can be hard at this age. Try the restroom first, then check the Kumayaki queue; if it is too long, take a short walk in Aioi Railway Park.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The railway park and Kumayaki make easy conversation starters.

Seeing the trains and station building before eating Kumayaki turns the break into a small outing. Shigechan Land is easier to choose once children can agree not to touch the artworks.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Extend the outing to the former station, art, and pass scenery.

Connect the former Aioi Line station, Kumayaki design, and the landscape at Tsubetsu Pass for a learning opportunity. Check travel distance and weather before going on to the pass or Mori Tsubetsu.

Shigechan Land

Generally open seasonally from early May to late October. It may close on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, so check the day if it is a main stop.

Tsubetsu Pass Observatory

Generally open from June 1 to October 31. The sea of clouds, poor-weather restrictions, and pass-road conditions can greatly affect a visit.

Seasonal events in Tsubetsu Town

Events such as Kurinso Week, celebrating Japanese primroses, and the Ice Candle Festival may inspire an itinerary even though they are some distance from the roadside station. Check the schedule for the year you visit.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan for a possible Kumayaki wait

This signature product often draws people waiting for fresh batches on weekends and holiday breaks. Leave room to use the restroom, browse the shop, or visit Aioi Railway Park first, so a queue can still be part of a restful stop.

With children, divide the stop between sweets and a railway-park walk

This stop suits a short sequence of Kumayaki, restroom, and Aioi Railway Park better than a long play session on large equipment. Shorter waits and the option to go outside help especially with younger children.

Shigechan Land depends on day and season

This detour connects with the Kumayaki design, but the museum opens seasonally and has several closed days. Check its season and weekdays in advance if you intend to visit.

Treat Tsubetsu Pass as a separate outing from the station

Views of the sea of clouds and Lake Kussharo are a major draw, but opening dates, weather, and pass-road conditions matter. Eat and use the restroom at the roadside station, then check the live camera before setting out.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Watch for Tuesday and New Year closures and weekday changes at the dining area. If coming for a meal or arriving late, check official channels and social media.
  • Kumayaki can involve a wait on weekends and holidays; leave time to use the restroom, shop, or visit the railway park first.
  • When buying tofu or atsuage, choose them last on hot days and consider how long they can stay cool.
  • Shigechan Land generally opens from early May to late October and may close on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
  • Tsubetsu Pass is generally a June–October destination. For a sea-of-clouds trip, check the live camera, weather, and pass road.
  • For Mori Tsubetsu, check current last-admission time for day-use bathing and road conditions in winter or toward evening.
  • Parking counts are approximate; follow information on site.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Freshly baked sweets

Original Kumayaki, Nama Kuma, and seasonal flavors

The first choice for a short stop with a taste of Aioi. If there is a wait, visit the shop or restroom first.

For lunch

Juwari soba with Mashu buckwheat, Aioi soba set, and hot or cold soba

Good for a longer break. Check last order and weekday changes; if arriving late, switch to a snack or shopping.

To take away

Handmade tofu, atsuage thick fried tofu, ganmodoki tofu fritters, miso, and dried udon noodles

Take Aioi flavors to your lodging or home. On hot days, buy these last and consider how long they can stay cool.

To share with children

Kumayaki, soft-serve ice cream, and soy-milk sweets

If children's meal sizes are hard to predict, a sweet snack and brief outdoor walk give you flexibility.

When it is busy

An item from the shop, Aioi Railway Park, or Shigechan Land

If the meal or Kumayaki queue is long, walk around the former station first or keep the option of a quick shop-only stop.
