Naruse’s stopover notes

Sorting out the shopping here helps the Taiki trip fall into place.

Naruse (成瀬 休路) sees Cosmall Taiki as both an entrance to the space town and a place to get ready before heading to Bansei or the Rekifune River. Parking is straightforward, and the toilets and shops are convenient for a short stop; the rocket display and space souvenirs give children something to discuss. Whether the day includes soft serve, gold panning, or an onsen, simplifying the plan here makes the drive easier.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Cosmall Taiki is a shopping and rest stop in central Taiki. The local products area offers farm and livestock products, seafood, and space-themed goods. Inside are displays of an actual rocket and experimental components, plus a children's play area. Soft serve is another draw from Golden Week, the late April–early May holiday period, until around the end of September; in summer, gold-panning tools may be available to rent. Rather than spending a long time at the station alone, use its toilets, shops, and tourist information before heading to SORA, the Rekifune River, or Bansei Onsen.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Taiki's space-town identity appears on the shelves and in the displays

In the local products area, look for vegetables, farm and livestock products, seafood, and space-themed goods inspired by plans for an aerospace industry base. Inside are an actual rocket that reached space from Taiki and displays of experimental components. Even a short stop makes it clear that you are in Taiki.

02

Allow time for summer soft serve

Soft serve is sold from Golden Week until around the end of September, including versions made with milk from Sakane Farm's pasture-raised cows, Hokkaido soft serve, and Taiki-grown haskap berry sauce. Sales may end early for machine cleaning or when ingredients run out, so avoid making a late-afternoon visit your only chance.

03

The play area and tourist information make family planning easier

This is not a station with large play equipment for a long stay, but the children's area, toilets, local products area, and tourist information are together in one place. Children can take a short break while you decide between SORA, the Rekifune River, and the onsen.

04

Keep it in mind as a starting point for gold panning and river events

In some years the roadside station is the pickup point for gold-panning tools. On the days of the Rekifune River carp-streamer display and Clear Stream Festival, travel around town also changes. Seasonal event dates vary, so distinguish standing station information from the latest event notices.

05

A final place to prepare before driving from town toward Bansei

Before heading to Bansei Onsen, Bansei Wildflower Garden, or Oikamanaito, use the toilets and pick up drinks or small purchases here. Wind and weather change how the coast feels, so leaving some flexibility in the plan suits a Taiki visit.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break before or after Churui-Taiki Interchange

Shop for a taste of Taiki in 30 minutes

After parking, use the toilets first, then browse space-themed goods, dairy products, and seafood in the local products area. Even without a full meal, choosing a Handa Farm drinking yogurt or a space-themed souvenir gives you something to remember your Taiki stop by.

Parking → toilets → local products area → tourist information → departure

The roadside station generally closes at 17:30. For a late arrival or the New Year holidays, follow the official notice.

A half-day drive with primary-school children

Talk about space with the children, then head to SORA

Start with the rocket display and space-themed goods inside the station, then drive to SORA. During its open season, guides are present on some days, and the actual rockets and full-size MOMO model offer more to talk about. Get drinks and use the toilets at the station before leaving.

Station → space displays → SORA → meal in town

SORA's opening period, hours, and guide availability vary. November notices give an earlier closing time.

Outdoor activities from late June through September

Pair summer soft serve with gold panning

Have soft serve early at the station. In years when tools can be rented, drive toward Kamuy Kotan Park Campground for gold panning. It is a riverside activity, so prepare shoes that can get wet, a towel, insect protection, and information about brown bears.

Station → soft serve → tool rental → Kamuy Kotan Park Campground

The 2026 notice says there is little gold and guided experiences are suspended. Think of it as time by the river rather than counting on finding gold.

Adult travelers and a break from long-distance driving

Drive to Bansei Onsen and end with a view of the sea

Shop and use the toilets at the station, then drive about 30 minutes to Bansei Onsen. You can bathe with a view of the Pacific, and there is a restaurant, making it a satisfying late-drive break. The coast can be windy, so keep outdoor walking brief on those days.

Station → Bansei Onsen → Bansei Wildflower Garden if time allows

It is generally closed on Tuesdays from October through March. Restaurant hours vary by day, so check shortly before a visit if you plan to eat there.

Late April–early May or early August

Stop in for the spring and summer Rekifune River events

The Rekifune River carp-streamer display in spring and the Clear Stream Festival and fireworks in summer are major events in town. The station may be busier as a parking and shopping base, so use the toilets and shops early and follow traffic directions for the event site.

Station → Rekifune River bank → food in town or the road home

Temporary parking and traffic control may be in place on event days. Plan differently from an ordinary brief station stop.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works well for a short toilet and shopping break.

Think of it as a quick break from the car, not a destination for large play equipment. Check opening status over New Year or late in the day.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Works for a short visit to the children's area and soft serve.

Instead of a long spell in the shops, link the toilets, a sweet treat, and tourist information into short stops. Put safe footing and water safety first at the river or gold-panning site.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The rocket display and space souvenirs give them something to talk about.

Add SORA and the station display becomes a preview. During soft-serve season, a treat can give children a clear finish to the stop.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

Easy to extend into learning and play at SORA, the Rekifune River, or a gold-panning site.

Rather than squeezing space, the clear river, gold panning, and onsen into one day, choose one according to the season and weather for a more memorable outing.

Shoes and a change of clothes for a river day

For the Rekifune River or gold panning, bring shoes that can get wet, a towel, and insect protection.

Have soft serve by early afternoon

Even during the sales season, machine cleaning or a shortage of ingredients can bring closing forward.

Check SORA's open season

It is generally open from April through November, with an earlier closing time in November.

Allow for wind and distance toward Bansei

The onsen and wildflower garden require a drive. The coast's apparent temperature can change quickly.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Parking north of the Taiki Town Economic Center

It can host events using local food, such as a midwinter appreciation festival. Treat event parking arrangements separately from the usual parking route.

Rekifune River bank upstream of Taiki Bridge

The main venue for the carp streamers, Clear Stream Festival, and fireworks. It is within walking distance of the station, but traffic and parking change on event days.

Kamuy Kotan Park Campground

A riverside outdoor base where rented gold-panning tools can be used. Check for rising water and brown-bear information.

Taiki Space Exchange Center SORA

An exhibition facility introducing Taiki as a space town. Check the availability of guides during the open season and any exhibition updates.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

It may look like an ordinary roadside station, but the shelves and displays show its space-town character

Visitor accounts suggest that the space-themed goods, rocket display, and town tourist information leave more of an impression than the size of the building. A stop before or after SORA adds context.

Soft serve is popular, but check the season and possible early closing

Reviews and introductions often mention the soft serve. Sales run from Golden Week to around the end of September and can end early for machine cleaning or when ingredients run out. For a late summer afternoon, have a shopping alternative in mind.

Better as a break to choose the next destination than a long stay

Rather than spending half a day at the roadside station alone, make brief use of the local products, toilets, and tourist information before continuing to SORA, the Rekifune River, or Bansei Onsen. Its strengths stand out as a stop between drives.

For gold panning, prioritize preparation and safety over how much you find

A 2026 official notice says rainfall has left little gold, making it difficult for beginners. Check for high water and brown bears, and prepare for wet footing. With children, plan for safe outdoor time rather than a successful gold find.

The Bansei area's appeal changes with season and weather

At Bansei Onsen, the wildflower garden, and Oikamanaito, flowers, wind, winter ice, and the feel of the coast shape the visit. Once you have shopped at the station, check the weather and add just one stop to avoid tiring yourself out.

Event days change parking and shopping around the station too

At town events such as the Rekifune River Clear Stream Festival and the midwinter appreciation festival, the roadside station and nearby lots become part of event traffic routes. Arrive early and allow for alternative parking instead of expecting a normal short stop.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The roadside station's basic hours are approximately 9:00–17:30. Follow separate notices for the shopping center, seasonal sales, and New Year holidays.
  • Soft serve is sold from Golden Week to around the end of September. Machine cleaning or a shortage of ingredients may end sales early; switch to a shopping break if you arrive late in the afternoon.
  • For a SORA visit, check its opening period and hours from April through November. A November notice gives an approximate closing time of 15:00.
  • Gold panning requires preparation for rising water, brown bears, and wet footing. A 2026 notice says guided experiences are suspended.
  • On Rekifune River event days, check parking and traffic control separately. Crowds differ from those at a normal short station stop.
  • Before driving to Bansei Onsen or the wildflower garden, get drinks, use the toilets, and prepare a cooler at the station for an easier coastal drive.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Aim for summer sweets

Pasture-milk soft serve, Hokkaido soft serve, haskap berry sauce

Good for a hot day or a break with children. Check the sales season and the chance of an early close; arriving by early afternoon is safer.

Take dairy products home

Handa Farm drinking yogurt, local dairy products

A first choice for a quick taste of Tokachi shopping. A cooler makes it easier to choose.

Look for seafood

Frozen shijimi clams, seafood, seasonal direct sales

When the Taiki fisheries cooperative or other seafood sellers are present, the shopping connects with the coastal side of Bansei. Decide promptly if you find a limited-quantity item.

Choose a space souvenir

Space-themed goods, space-food-style souvenirs, something to recall the rocket display

Suitable before or after SORA, or as a gift for a child or space enthusiast. These are purchases for the story of the trip more than practical supplies.

Plan a meal elsewhere in town

Town restaurants, Bansei Onsen restaurant, light food along the way

Shopping and sweets are the main draw at the station. For a substantial lunch, include a restaurant in town or Bansei Onsen in your plan.
