Kyuro's rest-stop notes

Even without time for a rice meal, you can take a taste of this rice-focused station with you.

Kyuro Yakumo sees this as a convenient rest stop near Fukagawa IC and pays attention to the order of eating: kamameshi when there is time, onigiri when in a hurry, rice-flour sweets for a treat and the farm stand before heading home. Sorting out parking, toilets and opening hours first leaves room for Fukagawa rice and fruit even on a short stop.

Do not fixate only on kamameshi; keeping onigiri and rice-flour sweets as options makes the station easier to use.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Rice Land Fukagawa sits where National Routes 12 and 233 meet, about two minutes by car from Fukagawa IC on the Do-O Expressway. It is a gateway to the food of rice-growing Fukagawa. Pair a break on a long drive with freshly cooked kamameshi (rice cooked and served in a small pot), handmade onigiri rice balls, rice-flour sweets, and locally grown vegetables and fruit. With toilets open 24 hours, parking for about 150 vehicles and an adjacent gas station, it works for both a meal-focused visit and a short stop en route to Asahikawa or Rumoi.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Discover the rice-focused station through second-floor kamameshi and first-floor takeaway

On the second floor, Ajishirube Ekitei specializes in kamameshi cooked after you order. If time is short, stop at the first-floor Onigiri-ya Kappogi, Temari Omusubi TEMARI, F-CLUB or Tawawa for a taste of rice country during a brief break.

02

Close to Fukagawa IC, so you can plan a break around your meal

The official access guide puts the station about two minutes by car from Fukagawa IC. Parking for 150 vehicles, one EV charger, 24-hour toilets and an adjacent gas station make it a useful place to reset a route toward Asahikawa, Rumoi or Sapporo.

03

Fukagawa flavors extend beyond rice to soba, fruit and cider

Fukagawa is known for soba and fruit as well as rice. Combine Pad Village's Tadoshi soba and Fujitani Orchard fruit crepes, seasonal vegetables from the eciR farm stand, and Fukagawa cider and Uroko Dango sweets from the specialty shop for several reasons to shop before leaving.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A long drive toward Asahikawa or Rumoi

Combine a meal and a break just after Fukagawa IC

After leaving the expressway, find parking and the toilets first. If you have time, go upstairs for kamameshi. If you are in a hurry, choose first-floor onigiri or rice-flour sweets, then get drinks and fuel before returning to the national routes.

Fukagawa IC → parking → 24-hour toilets → kamameshi or onigiri → National Route 12 or 233

The restaurant opens during the 11 o'clock hour. Kamameshi can involve a wait, so keep a takeaway option if your departure time is fixed.

Adults taking a lunch break or making a food-focused detour

Make rice-country lunch the main event

Center the meal on Ajishirube Ekitei's kamameshi. While waiting or afterward, browse the first-floor specialty shop, eciR farm stand and F-CLUB. Eating rice, buying rice-flour sweets and choosing vegetables for dinner makes good use of the station's name.

Second-floor restaurant → specialty shop → eciR farm stand → F-CLUB

Each shop has its own hours and closing days. The station closes earlier in winter; also check Pad Village and Tawawa's individual closures.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Mix a short play break with food for children

The free rice quiz and game corner offers a change of pace during a long drive. Families with babies can use the diaper-changing table in the multipurpose toilet; younger children can rest and have a sweet; older children can explore rice, soba and fruit as topics.

Toilets → rice quiz and games → onigiri or sweets → a brief look around the farm stand

This is not a place for hours of play on large equipment. For more physical activity, continue toward Agri Kobo Maabu or the campground.

A fine-weather drive around Fukagawa

Add a hot spring and a viewpoint for a half-day outing

After lunch and shopping at the station, head to Agri Kobo Maabu for a hot spring bath and Togero Pass Parking Park for views of fields and the Ishikari River. From spring to autumn, enjoy the view; in winter, consider snowy roads and sunset and add only a manageable extra stop.

Station → Agri Kobo Maabu → Togero Pass Parking Park → return journey

Togero Pass has a winter closure period. For a night-view visit, check road conditions, sunset and toilet access in advance.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

The 24-hour toilets and diaper-changing table in the multipurpose toilet are reassuring.

A short sequence of parking, toilets, diaper change and shopping is easier than a long stay. The rest area is a place to sit and eat purchased takeaway food.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sweets and a break work well, but the station alone is not a place for extended play.

Try a short rice quiz or game, then Komecchi-yaki or baby castella for a change of pace. If children need to run around, move on to an outdoor facility.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Rice, soba and fruit are easy topics to discuss while eating.

Children can enjoy choosing onigiri, crepes and rice-flour sweets. Adding Maabu or the campground in the afternoon lets you switch from food to outdoor play.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Pairing rice learning with a viewpoint can make the visit memorable.

After the rice quiz and games, look over the fields from Togero Pass or Kunimi Pass and connect the rice you ate to the land where it grows.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Kamameshi is the signature dish, but build its wait into a tight itinerary

Official and tourism information emphasizes that Ajishirube Ekitei cooks kamameshi after the order is placed. Accounts of visits also often mention a wait after buying a meal ticket. Choose between a day centered on lunch and a travel-focused day with first-floor rice-based takeaway.

The first floor alone can deliver a taste of rice country

Onigiri-ya Kappogi, Temari Omusubi TEMARI, F-CLUB and Tawawa offer Fukagawa-grown rice and rice-flour snacks even when you skip the restaurant. On a short stop, look at takeaway first, then decide whether to have kamameshi.

Near Fukagawa IC, with good road access and rest facilities

The official access information lists roughly two minutes by car from Fukagawa IC, 150 parking spaces, one EV charger and an adjacent gas station. On a long drive, it is useful for toilets, fuel and choosing the next road as well as food.

New rice, fruit, viewpoints and snowy roads change the seasonal visit

From spring through autumn, consider fruit and views of the fields; autumn brings newly harvested rice and harvest events. In winter, the station closes earlier and snowy roads to nearby viewpoints need care. Let the season determine whether to stay at the station or extend the trip to Togero Pass or Apple Land Yama no Eki Otoe.

Event days bring special food, so plan parking and meals with flexibility

Announcements included the 2026 Grand Anniversary Festival, photo contest, mystery game and summer festival, connecting the station and town center. Special menus add interest, but can change the usual meal flow; keeping snacks or takeaway as an option helps.
