Kyuji Nanjo's suggested order

Think of this station first as a place to recharge before the next view, rather than only as somewhere to eat.

At Hama-Koshimizu, the scenery opens suddenly toward the sea as you drive from Abashiri toward Shiretoko. Parking here and combining a restroom stop, a break for the children, shopping, and a snack makes the onward drive to the flower garden or Shari easier. A short stop that includes the kids' area and observatory makes fuller use of this station than rushing in solely for a meal.

1

Park

As a guide, there are 78 standard-car spaces and 11 large-vehicle spaces. In tourist season, visitors to the flower garden and coast add to the flow of people.

2

Go indoors

Use the shop, restaurant, kids' area, and open seating as one combined break.

3

Step outside

Head to Furetoi Observatory in good weather. The view changes from drift ice in winter to flowers and sea in summer.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hanayaka (葉菜野花) Koshimizu sits on National Route 244 and connects directly to JR Hama-Koshimizu Station, making it an easy breather on a drive toward Shiretoko or Abashiri. The shop offers Koshimizu vegetables, potato starch, Hogaja potato snacks, dried salmon, and sweets made with rhubarb or wheat. At the restaurant, Jaga-imo Gorotto Curry with chunky potatoes, Koshimizu Tororo Soba with grated yam, mountain-wasabi rice bowls, and Nanjakorya Sticks bring the fields and sea to the same table. A kids' area added in the 2024 renovation makes indoor breaks easier for parents to supervise while seated. On clear days, climb the neighboring Furetoi Observatory; add Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden in summer or views of drift ice in winter, and this stop becomes an introduction to Koshimizu rather than just a shopping break. Guide Kyuji Nanjo recommends it as a place to park, use the restroom, let children unwind, and set off comfortably for the next view.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Find Koshimizu farm produce and Okhotsk flavors in one stop

The official guide lists Koshimizu vegetables, dried salmon, sweet potatoes, scallop chips, and Hogaja potato snacks in the shop. Potatoes, starch, wheat, rhubarb, and seafood show the breadth of local ingredients packed into this small station.

02

The restaurant specializes in potato dishes and coastal snacks

Koshimizu Tororo Soba with grated yam, Jaga-imo Gorotto Curry with chunky potatoes, mountain-wasabi rice bowls, jingisukan grilled lamb set meals, and Nanjakorya Sticks work for lunch or a lighter bite. The meal service window is fairly short, so if you miss lunch, leave room in your plans for takeout or a neighboring shop.

03

The kids' area changes the mood of a long drive

A kids' area with Bornelund play equipment opened in 2024. It has a two-story playhouse, toy kitchen, diorama table, and Magformers magnetic building toys; parents can watch while taking a break.

04

See sea, flowers, and drift ice beside the station

Furetoi Observatory is adjacent to both the roadside station and JR Hama-Koshimizu Station, overlooking Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden and the Sea of Okhotsk. Summer flowers, winter drift ice, and views toward Shiretoko on clear days give each season a different reason to stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A Route 244 drive with children

Give the family a break between Abashiri and Shiretoko

After leaving the car, go first to the restroom and kids' area. Once the children have played a little, look for drinks or sweets in the shop and, if the weather is good, walk to Furetoi Observatory. It is a chance for the whole family to reset during a long trip.

Parking lot → restrooms → kids' area → shop → Furetoi Observatory.

Children need a parent or guardian with them in the kids' area. Plan on a short visit when it is busy.

A food and shopping stop

Have potatoes for lunch and take Koshimizu products home

At lunchtime, choose Jaga-imo Gorotto Curry or tororo soba in the restaurant, then browse potato starch, Hogaja snacks, rhubarb jam, and dried salmon in the shop. Meals and shopping are in the same building, making it easier to get around even when the weather turns.

Restaurant → shop → check takeout → depart.

The restaurant is listed as closing at 15:00 in the town facility guide, but other official guides differ; check ahead. For a late arrival, consider the shop, takeout, or neighboring businesses.

A day paired with Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden

See summer flowers, then return to the station for a meal

In summer, first check the blooms at the flower garden or its Hana information center, then return to the station for lunch and shopping. If heat or wind cuts your outdoor walk short, you can revise the plan with an indoor break at the station.

Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden → roadside station → Furetoi Observatory.

Watch for snow-related restrictions at the flower garden's parking area and paths. Check the tourism association's guidance for the flowering season.

A winter drive along the Okhotsk coast

See winter drift ice and finish with a hot spring bath

Furetoi Observatory is often introduced as a drift-ice viewing spot. On windy days, avoid standing outside for long; stop for a warm drink at the station and add Koshimizu Onsen Fureai Center, a hot spring bathing facility, to avoid getting too cold.

Roadside station → Furetoi Observatory → Koshimizu Onsen Fureai Center.

Drift ice depends on its approach to shore and the weather. Check road surfaces and wind, and do not push on in difficult winter driving conditions.

A short nature-watching outing for adults

Spend a quiet day watching birds and wetlands

A visit to Tofutsu-ko Waterfowl and Wetland Center adds birds and boardwalk views at a Ramsar-listed wetland. Eating and using the restroom at the station first leaves you free to focus on observation by the lake.

Roadside station → Tofutsu-ko Waterfowl and Wetland Center → flower garden.

Birdwatching varies with the season and time of day. Binoculars and warm clothing can help.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★★☆

The indoor open seating and kids' area make it easy to plan a short change of pace apart from feeding or changing diapers.

A parent or guardian must accompany children in the kids' area. At busy times, keep a held-child break short.

Ages 2–3
★★★★★

Pretend cooking, a diorama, and Magformers offer plenty of play without having to roam far.

Play before a meal may make it harder to stop, so think about the restroom and ordering first.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The two-story playhouse and building toys can keep children engaged; on clear days, add outdoor play at Furetoi Observatory.

The observatory can be windy, so keep a jacket easy to reach in the car.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Combine the flower garden, drift ice, birds at Lake Tofutsu, and the directly connected JR station for learning along the way.

Indoor play alone may be brief. Add nearby nature sites for a more satisfying outing.

Indoor play

Kids' area with Bornelund equipment. Free to use; a parent or guardian must accompany children.

Shelter on rainy or windy days

Combine breaks at the shop, restaurant, and open seating area.

Outdoor activity

Furetoi Observatory is a short outing, but avoid it in strong wind or snow.

Meal times

The town facility guide lists the restaurant until 15:00; other official listings differ, so check ahead. For a late visit, consider snacks or neighboring businesses.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Choose a parking space near the entrance

The coast can be windy. If you expect to buy a lot, make room in the car first.

  2. 2
Use the restroom and browse the shop first

Taking care of the restroom, drinks, and possible souvenirs before the restaurant shortens the walk after eating.

  3. 3
Decide on the observatory based on the weather

Walk to nearby Furetoi Observatory if it is clear and calm. In strong wind, rain, or snow, prioritize an indoor break.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The connection to Hama-Koshimizu Station helps travelers without a car

The official guide states that the facility connects directly to JR Hama-Koshimizu Station. Although many visitors drive, travelers on the Senmo Main Line can use the restroom, restaurant, and shop as part of the station stop.

Plan your lunch arrival time

The town facility guide gives 11:00–15:00 for the restaurant and 11:00–17:00 for takeout, while other official pages give different restaurant hours. If traveling onward toward Shiretoko, do not rely solely on a late lunch here; consider snacks and neighboring businesses, and check ahead.

The kids' area is especially valuable on rainy days

The kids' area opened in 2024 and is described as designed for parents to watch while resting. Short indoor play helps families most when sea winds or rain make going outside difficult.

Furetoi Observatory extends the station visit into the scenery

The tourism association describes Furetoi Observatory as next to JR Hama-Koshimizu Station and the roadside station. Even stepping outside for five minutes after a meal helps you see how the sea and flower garden relate.

Summer flowers and winter drift ice offer different reasons to stop

Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden comes into its own in flower season, while Furetoi Observatory is a draw when drift ice can be seen. In winter, prioritize wind and road conditions even if the view is good; in summer, adjust your visit for flowering, insects, and heat.

Visitor accounts often praise snacks and breaks for children

Food and family-venue sites discuss parfaits, curry, direct station access, the kids' area, and its use as a play stop for a one-year-old. Without reproducing those accounts, this article reflects them in its advice on snacks after lunch service and practical indoor breaks.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • As a guide, the shop opens 9:00–18:00 from April to October and 9:00–17:30 from November to March. Restaurant and takeout hours differ, so decide your arrival time before a lunch visit.
  • Parking is listed as 78 standard-car and 11 large-vehicle spaces. During summer flower season and drift-ice season, nearby sightseeing adds to visitor traffic.
  • The kids' area is free, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It works best as a change of pace during a journey, rather than a place to linger for a long time.
  • Furetoi Observatory is within walking distance, but the coast can be windy. In winter, prioritize safe footing and warm clothing even when drift ice is visible.
  • Watch for snow-season closures and snow-clearing conditions at Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden and Hana. Plan differently for flower season and winter.
  • If the station's food outlets are crowded or closed, neighboring Ramen Taroyama, Crepe House CoCo, and Hitsuji Biyori are other options. Their closed days vary by business.
