Highlights

Roadside Station Date Rekishi no Mori links the Date City Tourist Products Center with a large park, the Date Museum of History and Culture, a combined playground, and Bocca, all within walking distance. In the morning, browse Date vegetables supplied by about 80 farming households; at lunchtime, choose among Handsome-yaki filled cakes, Date-style tempura fish cakes, bread, and a meal at Bocca. Our guide Makabe presents it as a gateway to Date: park, use the restroom, shop, let children play outside, and add a history and culture stop without a complicated route.

Makabe's suggested stop order

Take care of essentials first, then split play and shopping for an easier visit.

Makabe sees Date Rekishi no Mori as a station where children and adults often want different things. After parking, first find the restrooms and a place to rest. Then some can go to the playground while others browse vegetables or choose a snack. Meet back at the products center at the end to take home a taste of Date without rushing.

First

Settle the restroom stop, where you parked, and the direction you will leave.

Split up

Divide playground time, the park, shopping, and meals among your companions.

Return

Meet back at the products center and choose Date vegetables or a light meal.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make shopping the focus of the trip

Date vegetables, processed foods, sweets, flower seedlings, and indigo-dyed goods let you take home a taste of the area even on a short stop.

02

Give children room to play outside

The large park and combined playground are close by, making it easy to swap time in the car for grass and play equipment.

03

Walk to local history and culture

The Date Museum of History and Culture, indigo workshop, swordsmith workshop, and former Date residence garden are nearby, so the visit can extend beyond shopping.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A stop while passing through

Take a taste of Date home in 30 minutes

Park off National Route 37, use the restroom, then choose a Date vegetable or processed product at the farm shop. Even without time for a sit-down meal, a Handsome-yaki filled cake, tempura kamaboko fish cake, or bread can continue the trip in the car.

Parking lot → restroom → farm shop → light meal or bread → departure.

The vegetable and bread selection changes during the day. If you have something specific in mind, arriving in the morning is safer.

A drive with children

Let children play before shopping

On a long drive, let children move around in the large park or at Date Adventure first, then return to the products center once they have settled. In heavy rain or cold weather, switch to a short stop in the rest area and the museum's free area.

Restroom at the products center → park and playground → light meal → shopping.

The parking lot and nearby roads can be busy on event days, so allow extra time.

An adult's side trip

Spend half a day in the historic park

From the roadside station, walk to the Date Museum of History and Culture, the former Date residence garden, and the park with its stone walls and Otemon Gate. Together they show Date City's layers of Jomon, Ainu, and samurai culture. When a shopping receipt benefit is offered, it can also pair well with a museum visit.

Products center → museum → former Date residence garden → return to the products center for more shopping.

The museum closes on Mondays and has a last admission time. Check its official opening information for the day of your visit.

A day with uncertain meal times

Keep meal options from breakfast into the evening

Besides the light meals inside the products center, the Bocca Date branch is in the same Rekishi no Mori area. Choose Bocca's breakfast in the morning, a light meal at the products center at midday, or return to Bocca later in the day, depending on when your drive brings you here.

National Route 37 → products center or Bocca → walk in the park → return journey.

Shop hours, sellouts, and crowds vary by day. It is easier to keep more than one meal option in mind.

A sunny half-day drive

Add a World Heritage site for a deeper look at Date

After shopping and resting near the station, drive to the Kitakogane Shell Midden Historic Site Park. Together with the roadside station's history and culture museum, it lets you compare the samurai culture of the town center and the coastal Jomon culture in one day.

Roadside station → Date Museum of History and Culture → Kitakogane Shell Midden Historic Site Park.

Kitakogane Shell Midden Historic Site Park closes for winter. Include it during its April–November open season.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★★☆

Easy to combine a restroom stop, time in the rest area, and brief shopping.

The park depends on the weather. If carrying a child, a short visit to the products center and rest area is manageable.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Grass and a short walk can help children reset.

If you go to the playground, have an adult watch nearby; keep shopping brief and add a snack.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Date Adventure and a snack make a good combination.

Play first, then return to the farm shop to make shopping time easier for parents.

Primary school children
★★★★★

The playground, museum, and Kitakogane Shell Midden can turn the break into a learning outing.

Adding the history and culture museum or the World Heritage Kitakogane Shell Midden makes this a destination for the day, beyond a simple rest stop.

Restrooms

Choose between the restrooms inside the products center and the park facilities. Have children go before heading to the playground.

Outdoor play

The large park and Date Adventure are nearby and especially enjoyable in good weather.

Rain and winter

Switch to the farm shop, rest area, or museum to stay comfortable.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The Otemon Gate and stone walls make the arrival memorable

Although the roadside station sits along the highway, the Otemon Gate and stone walls of the adjoining park are landmarks. Even on a first visit, they make it easy to know where to return and where a family can meet after splitting up.

Come in the morning if vegetables are your goal

The farm shop, supplied by about 80 farming households, is at the heart of this station. Reviews and travel articles also emphasize its vegetable selection. If you arrive after midday, consider snacks and processed foods too for a more satisfying stop.

You need not rely on a single meal choice

With Handsome Shokudo, Date no Tempura, bread, and Bocca as options, you can adapt to busy hours or hungry children with a light bite. You can still taste Date without a long lunch.

The park makes this especially useful for families

The products center alone is mainly a shopping stop. Add the lawn, Date Adventure, and the area around the library and food education center, and it becomes much more useful as a driving break with children.

Events are fun, but parking becomes less predictable

On days when the Date Musha Festival or a winter event fills the larger park, the visit differs from a normal roadside stop. Allow extra time even if you only intended a quick restroom break.

You can visit in winter, but plan more indoor time

Keep outdoor play brief in Hokkaido's winter and focus on the products center, snacks, museum, or a trip to an onsen, a Japanese hot-spring bath. Nearby places such as Kitakogane Shell Midden close for winter, so change the route with the season.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The products center generally opens 9:00–18:00. Its tenants close at 18:00 from April to October and 17:00 from November to March, so leave extra time for a winter late-afternoon arrival.
  • Parking capacities differ between the roadside station registration and park facility information. On event days, prioritize Date City's parking guidance and allow for traffic on surrounding roads.
  • Vegetables, bread, and seasonal products vary in availability through the day. Arrive toward morning if shopping is the main purpose.
  • If taking children to the playground, agree on a restroom stop and meeting place first so shopping and outdoor play can happen separately.
  • The Date Museum of History and Culture closes on Mondays and has a last admission time. If visiting after shopping, plan backward from its closing time.
  • Include Kitakogane Shell Midden Historic Site Park during its April–November open season. In winter, the museum or Date Onsen is a more practical alternative.
  • Events in the larger park, such as the Date Musha Festival, extend a normal roadside-station visit. For a brief stop, leave room to shift your arrival time.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Light snack
    Handsome-yaki
A baked cake with seasonal fillings, good for a small appetite or a child's snack.
  • Date specialty
    Date no Tempura
Tempura kamaboko, a fried fish cake, is easy to enjoy with soba or take away.
  • Bread
    Boulangerie I-Box
Choose bread made with Date ingredients and seasonal products.
  • Direct farm sales
Date vegetables and local processed foods
Seasonal vegetables from about 80 farming households, sweets, and processed meat and seafood products.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Morning shopping

Date vegetables and flower seedlings

Come early for the best choice of seasonal vegetables and flowers. A cooler bag or the shipping counter may also be useful.

The selection changes with the season and deliveries.

Light snacks

Handsome-yaki and Date no Tempura

Taste something local even if you do not stop for a full meal. These snacks are also easy to share with children.

Bread

Boulangerie I-Box

Useful if you miss lunchtime; you can also buy bread for the next morning.

Popular items may run low later in the day.

A full meal

Yomen Chaya Bocca Date branch

If light snacks inside the roadside station are not enough, this restaurant in the same Rekishi no Mori area offers Western-style dishes and dairy products.

For later

Processed seafood and meat products, and sweets

Choose something to open at your accommodation or at home, rather than eating everything in the car, to bring back a memory of Date.
