Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Sarabetsu's flavors leave an impression through the strength of its fields

Pipopa's shelves show more than tourist souvenirs: potatoes, beans, locally grown wheat, starch, cheese and processed plum products reveal what Sarabetsu grows. Donguri no Mura potato chips, Sumomo Nomu yogurt, plum jam and Sarabetsu-san udon bring the breadth of Tokachi into a shopping stop.

02

The restaurant suits lunch or a sweet break

Restaurant Potato ranges from butadon (a pork rice bowl), ramen and soba to Sarabetsu-san udon and a jingisukan set meal (Hokkaido-style grilled mutton). People wanting a full meal and those stopping only for soft-serve ice cream with plum jam can both take a break here. Allow 30 minutes to an hour to see the restaurant and shop together, rather than building the whole visit around a meal.

03

An easy-to-time stop linking the airport, interchange and circuit

About 15 minutes by car from Tokachi Obihiro Airport or Sarabetsu Interchange, and at the entrance to Tokachi Speedway, the station is convenient at either end of a trip. Parking for 65 passenger cars and 7 large vehicles, plus 24-hour toilets, make it a dependable first place to rest. During business hours, add Sarabetsu shopping and food.

04

On a clear day, venture a little farther

Around the station are a walking path and rest area square, with pleasant views of the Hidaka Mountains on clear Tokachi days. With more time, combine Sarabetsu Country Park, Donguri Park, Family Park Sarabetsu and Fukushi no Sato Onsen for a visit that goes beyond shopping and eating.

Visitors combining lunch and shopping

Families heading to Sarabetsu Country Park, Donguri Park or Family Park Sarabetsu

Use it as a supply stop for camping and outdoor play

Tokachi Speedway visitors, Golden Week travelers and harvest-season weekend visitors

Keep it as a flexible stop on circuit or event days

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The travel time from Sarabetsu Interchange or the airport is fairly easy to plan, so the station fits just after setting out or before heading home.
  • Listed winter hours end earlier for both shop and restaurant. Check the time before planning a late-afternoon meal.
  • If buying at the vegetable market or choosing refrigerated items, plan for a cooler bag and a place to put purchases in the car.
  • On Tokachi Speedway or village event days, allow for a busier parking area and restaurant than usual.
  • Travel to nearby facilities generally requires a car. Deciding on one extra destination and what to do at the station can make the day less tiring.
Food

Eating and shopping

Make a quick round of the toilets and shop, choose one Sarabetsu specialty, and set off again.

Lunch

Butadon, ramen, Sarabetsu-san udon and the Oya-buta set

For a visit during restaurant hours. Noodles and rice bowls make it easier to accommodate companions who want different-sized meals.

Take-home shopping

Beans, starch, udon, processed plum products and cheese

Tokachi-style processed foods can bring a reminder of the trip to the table at home. Choose refrigerated items with travel time in mind.

Weekends and harvest season

Vegetables from the weekend fresh vegetable market, potatoes, asparagus and leafy greens

From early June into autumn, the vegetable market can be a reason to visit. On some days, shopping earlier offers more choice.

Event and circuit days

Light meals, soft serve, drinks and take-home souvenirs
