Early travel, after sleeping in your vehicle, or en route from Sunagawa or Akabira
Reset your drive with a morning bath
The 6:00–8:00 morning bath is a major strength here. Warm up in the hot spring, then use the toilets and plan your onward route; the roadside-station shop will not yet be open for shopping.
Parking → morning bath → toilets → depart toward Sunagawa, Akabira, or Ashibetsu
The roadside-station shop and café are closed during the 6:00–8:00 morning bath. In April–October, the shop opens at 9:00 and the café at 10:00; in November–March, they open at 10:00 and 11:00 respectively. Plan food and shopping around those separate hours.
A 30–45 minute break or a drive with little shopping
Make a short stop at the plant-filled café
Since the 2025 renovation, the roadside station has a distinctive mix of houseplants, gardening supplies, aromatherapy goods, and a café. Browse Utashinai honey, smoothies, and toasted sandwiches to take a little of the city with you even if you skip a sit-down meal.
Parking → toilets → plants and sundries → café → depart
The roadside-station shop is generally closed Mondays and shuts by 16:00 in winter. Late in the day, consider the restaurant hours at the hot-spring facility instead.
Adult travelers, after skiing, or on a rainy or snowy day
Spend half a day on the hot spring and local food
Combining day-use bathing with the restaurant makes a visit worthwhile even when outdoor walking is difficult. Indicative food service is lunch 11:30–14:00, noodles only 14:00–14:30, and dinner 17:00–20:00; plan whether to eat before or after bathing.
Roadside-station shop → restaurant → hot spring → rest area → depart
Opening hours may change seasonally, so check official notices first if you are coming specifically for a meal.
A half-day drive for first-time visitors to Utashinai
Continue to coal-mining heritage and Mount Kamoi
After relaxing at the hot spring, see exhibits on coal mining and the Utashinai Line at the Yumetsumugi local history museum for a different view of the city. On a clear morning, head to Mount Kamoi for a sea of clouds; in winter, the ski area; and in spring, the cherry-lined former railway path.
Roadside station → Yumetsumugi local history museum → cherry-lined path or Mount Kamoi → return to Route 114
The sea of clouds at Mount Kamoi is a natural phenomenon. Conditions are often favorable around dawn in spring and autumn; if it does not appear, make the museum or hot spring the main stop.
