How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

See first
Sky Cabin observation deck

See the town and the Sea of Okhotsk, then decide whether to visit Hinode Cape or add a meal in town.

For food
Ippukuya Oumu

Dattan soba, a Tartary buckwheat croquette and soft serve are options. Plan around its seasonal opening from spring through autumn.

For shopping
Tartary buckwheat and seafood souvenirs

Seafood and Tartary buckwheat make distinctly Oumu souvenirs. Consider the journey home when choosing anything that needs chilling.

For a break
Outdoor 24-hour toilet and parking

Outside shop hours, use the stop for the toilet and road information; the observation deck and shop may be closed.

To go farther
Miyanomori Park or Hinode Cape

Walk to the nearby forest for a short outing, or drive to Hinode Cape for the sea. Winter drift ice conditions change the view.

Yasuji Wakamiya’s rest-stop notes

See the sea, decide what to eat, and make the drive to the next break easier.

This is not a large complex. Checking the parking, toilets, opening hours and shop season first makes the visit easier. Look out over the sea and town from the Sky Cabin, then, if Ippukuya is open, sample a little of Oumu’s food. With more time, visit Miyanomori Park; in clear weather, continue to Hinode Cape. A North Okhotsk drive suits that kind of flexible plan.

This is a station where I would see the sea from the observation deck, then choose how to eat, shop and rest without rushing.
Highlights

Roadside Station Oumu is a rest stop with an observation deck in central Oumu, beside National Route 238. Start at the Sky Cabin to see how the town and the Sea of Okhotsk fit together. When the seasonally operated Ippukuya shop is open, try Dattan soba (Tartary buckwheat noodles), Rishiri kombu udon (noodles with kelp from Rishiri), a Tartary buckwheat croquette or soft serve, and browse local specialties. Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park are within walking distance; Hinode Cape and its hot spring are a drive of a little over ten minutes. This stop can anchor a summer seaside visit, winter drift ice viewing or a wait for sunrise.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Start at the observation deck to plan your time in Oumu

The station’s landmark is the Sky Cabin, an observation deck about as high as a 7-story building. Its shape can resemble a scallop, though it was designed to evoke an airship. From here you can see how the town, National Route 238 and the Sea of Okhotsk relate to one another. Look out over the sea and town first, then decide on shopping, food or a trip to Hinode Cape.

02

Plan food and shopping around Ippukuya’s seasonal opening

On the 1st floor, Ippukuya Oumu offers local Oumu specialties, Dattan soba (Tartary buckwheat noodles), soft serve and more. The shop generally opens from spring through autumn. In winter, focus your stop on the observation deck, toilets and travel information; for a meal, consider the town center or the hotel at Hinode Cape.

03

Long opening hours and a 24-hour toilet support a North Okhotsk break

The station’s indicative opening hours are 8:00–21:00 from May through October and 8:00–20:00 from November through April. The outdoor toilet is listed as available 24 hours a day. Parking has 46 spaces for standard cars and two for large vehicles. This is a useful place to stop and plan your next break before a long drive toward Esashi, Okoppe or Monbetsu.

04

Nearby parks and a cape a drive of a little over 10 minutes away extend the visit

The station alone makes a short stop. Walk to Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park for a forest stroll, or drive to Hinode Cape for the La Luna observation deck and a hot spring. Put the sea first on a clear day; on a cold or rainy day, center the visit on the station and hot spring.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 238

See the sea from the Sky Cabin and reset in 30 minutes

After parking, use the toilet first, then go up to the Sky Cabin. Look over central Oumu and the Sea of Okhotsk and choose your next destination. If the shop is open, add Dattan soba or souvenirs; when it is closed, keep the stop to rest and the view.

Parking → 24-hour toilet → observation deck → Ippukuya or information corner

The shop generally opens seasonally and during daytime. If a meal is essential, also consider restaurants in town or Hotel Hinodemisaki.

A driving break around lunchtime

Combine a little food and shopping

When Ippukuya Oumu is open, combine small tastes of Dattan soba, a Tartary buckwheat croquette or soft serve with local products. Save purchases needing chilling until the end to make the coastal drive easier.

Observation deck → light meal at Ippukuya → choose souvenirs → return to National Route 238

The shop closes for part of winter. Check its open days and hours in early spring and late autumn.

A change of pace for preschool and elementary-school children

Walk to the forest parks with children

The station is not a place for hours of play on large equipment. For movement, head to nearby Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park, with walking paths, birdsong, a park-golf course and a small ski slope. Park golf is a Japanese-style short-course game.

Station toilet → quick look from observation deck → Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park

Watch your footing in winter or after rain, and consider insects and sun in summer. Follow local signs for park facility seasons.

Clear days, drift ice season or a hot spring finish

Add Hinode Cape and a hot spring for a half-day outing

Drive a little over 10 minutes from the station to Hinode Cape for the fully glazed La Luna observation deck, shore, campsite and hot spring at Hotel Hinodemisaki. In winter, look for drift ice; in summer, combine sunrise or camping with the visit; on cold days, finish at the hot spring.

Roadside Station Oumu → Hinode Cape La Luna observation deck → Hotel Hinodemisaki

Sunrise time varies greatly by season. In winter, check icy roads, wind and whether drift ice has reached shore, and keep the itinerary manageable.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A diaper-changing table and 24-hour toilet make short breaks practical.

Keep time at the observation deck and shop short. Prepare in the car or identify another facility for feeding or a longer break.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

After seeing the observation deck, a park may work better than a long stay inside the station.

Choose a snack first to keep the shop visit short if children want to touch the products.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The scallop-like observation deck, sea and forest parks can each be a small goal.

In good weather, try Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park. In winter, prioritize warm clothing and safe footing.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Use the observation deck to see the local geography, then talk about Hinode Cape and drift ice.

Adding Hinode Cape makes it easier to build a day around a view, the coast and a hot spring.

Short play stop at the station

After the observation deck and shop, children who want to move may enjoy the nearby parks.

Diaper-changing table

Hokkaido Roadside Stations lists a diaper-changing table. Check signs on site for its location.

Dress warmly in winter

Sea winds, drift ice season and icy roads can make it feel colder. Keep viewing and travel segments short.

A cooler bag helps

For seafood souvenirs, consider the trip home and the car’s interior temperature.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Use the toilet soon after parking

From the 46-space standard-car parking area, begin with a break at the 24-hour toilet.

  2. 2
Keep the observation deck visit short in poor weather

On windy days or in winter, do not stay outside longer than comfortable; look at the sea and town from where conditions allow.

  3. 3
Eat at the station only when the shop is open

If Ippukuya is open, have a light meal. Otherwise consider a restaurant in town or Hotel Hinodemisaki.

  4. 4
Choose the next stop before leaving

The drives toward Esashi, Okoppe and Monbetsu are long, so locate your next toilet and fuel stop before departure.

2026 Oumu Town Photo Contest

The tourism association has published information for the 2026 photo contest. In past years, general voting or displays have taken place at the station. For an autumn visit, check with the tourism association whether the station is a display or voting venue that year.

Drift ice season

The tourism association reported that drift ice reached Oumu’s Sea of Okhotsk coast on March 14, 2026. It does not reach shore every year, so consult the latest posts and road conditions before a winter visit.

Sunrise and camping at Hinode Cape

Hinode Cape suits summer camping and waiting for sunrise at the observation deck in winter. Sunrise times vary greatly by season; in mid-June they are very early. Plan lodging and hot spring stops accordingly.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The observation deck is the first reason to stop

The town and tourism association highlight views of central Oumu and the Sea of Okhotsk from a deck about as high as a 7-story building. Visitor review trends also mention the unusually shaped building and view as reasons to stop, beyond taking a break, so going up first makes sense.

Plan shop visits around seasonal operation

Ippukuya Oumu is mainly advertised as operating from spring through autumn, and the tourism association and Hokkaido Roadside Stations give different hours. Center the visit on the observation deck and toilets, then add food or shopping if the shop is open, rather than relying on it for a meal.

A practical rest stop on the Okhotsk coastal route

Beside National Route 238, the station lists a 24-hour toilet, stamp access during building hours and parking for 46 standard cars and two large vehicles. On a long drive, sort out your toilet break and next stop before shopping.

Families can pair the station with the parks

The station has a diaper-changing table and other facilities, but is not a place for prolonged play on large equipment. Nearby Miyanomori Park and Kaze no Oka Park have walking paths, birds, a park-golf course and a small ski slope, offering children a chance to move outdoors.

Winter offers drift ice and sunrise, but sightings are uncertain

Hinode Cape and La Luna are suggested for winter drift ice viewing, but the tourism association says ice does not necessarily reach shore every year. Treat it as an opportunity if conditions cooperate, with a hot spring or observation deck as an alternative.

Hinode Cape turns a short stop into a half-day outing

Hinode Cape is roughly 10–19 km from the station. It brings together the La Luna observation deck, campsite and Hotel Hinodemisaki hot spring. Review and hotel-blog trends also show interest in the sea, hot spring, sunrise and drift ice, making it a useful next stop in clear weather or on cold days.
