How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Check first
Train passing times at the Shinkansen Observation Tower

If you want to see a train, check the timetable when you arrive, then visit the local products hall or bakery while you wait.

To shop
Vegetables, sweets, and processed seafood at the local products hall

Choose easy-to-carry products made with Shiriuchi ingredients such as chives, rice flour, and seafood.

For a small bite
Asunaro Bakery Shiriuchi

For a break after 10 a.m., bread and soft-serve ice cream make a light snack.

With children
Observation tower, rural park, and a bakery break

This is better suited to a series of short activities—watching trains, taking a short walk, and eating—than to a long play session.

Where next
Shiriuchi Onsen, Omonai Observatory, or the Yagoshi coast

On a clear day, choose a viewpoint or the coast; in cold or rainy weather, a hot spring may be easier.

Michika's rest-stop notes

Take home one Shiriuchi flavor while waiting for a train, and the break will stay with you.

Michika Sawatari sees this as a place that becomes much easier to use once you decide the order of parking, restrooms, shopping, and the viewpoint. Check times at the Shinkansen Observation Tower, choose chives or processed seafood at the local products hall, then have a small bite at the bakery. That turns a stop on National Route 228 into a Shiriuchi detour.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shiriuchi is a roadside rest stop on National Route 228 in Shiriuchi, near the Hokkaido entrance to the Seikan Tunnel. At the local products hall, browse farmers' vegetables, sweets made with Shiriuchi ingredients, sake, and processed seafood. Next door, Asunaro Bakery offers bread made with local rice flour and chives, plus soft-serve ice cream. Check train passing times at the Shinkansen Observation Tower; if you have more time, continue to Shiriuchi Onsen, Omonai Observatory, or the Yagoshi coast for a detour through southern Hokkaido.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Waiting for a Shinkansen becomes part of the trip

Next to the roadside station, the Shinkansen Observation Tower overlooks Yunosato-Shiriuchi Signal Station, where Hokkaido Shinkansen and freight trains pass. Check passing times first, then spend the wait at the local products hall or bakery.

02

Shopping in Shiriuchi goes beyond vegetables and preserves

The local products hall stocks vegetables from nearby farms, sweets made with Shiriuchi ingredients, limited-edition sake, and processed seafood. In a town known for chives and oysters, choosing something to take home for the table is part of the pleasure.

03

A bakery and terrace make a satisfying break

Asunaro Bakery Shiriuchi offers bread made with local rice flour and chives, soft-serve ice cream, and seating for eating on site. Even when you do not want a full lunch, fresh bread and a drink make an easy stop.

04

A southern Hokkaido drive can continue to a hot spring, viewpoint, or coast

If time allows, drive to Shiriuchi Onsen; on a clear day, consider Omonai Observatory or the Yagoshi coast. Add one destination that suits the season and weather to see more of Shiriuchi.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Rail enthusiasts, families with children, and short breaks

Take a break around a train's passing time

On arrival, check passing times at the Shinkansen Observation Tower. If a train is due soon, go up first. If there is a wait, browse souvenirs at the local products hall or get a drink at the bakery to enjoy the time in between.

Park → restroom → check tower timetable → local products hall or bakery → observation tower.

Freight train operations can change. Use the passing-time timetable as a guide.

A stop while traveling on National Route 228

Make shopping and bread a 30-minute break

If you are not staying long, use the restroom, make a circuit of the local products hall, and choose one Shiriuchi sweet or processed seafood product. After 10 a.m., add the bakery to adjust your break around lunchtime.

Park → restroom → local products hall → Asunaro Bakery → depart.

Bread choices and stock at the hall vary by time of day, so earlier is better if shopping is your main aim.

Adults alone or an unhurried drive with elementary-school-age children and older

Extend the stop to a half-day hot-spring outing

After buying bread and souvenirs at the station, drive to Shiriuchi Onsen. Watching trains, shopping, and bathing in one route turns the station stop into an introduction to Shiriuchi.

Michi-no-Eki Shiriuchi → Shiriuchi Onsen Utopia Warakuen → Omonai Observatory if time allows.

Day-bathing hours, fees, and closure days may change; check the hot spring's official information or town guidance.

Spring cherry blossoms, coastal scenery from summer to autumn, and photography days

Add a viewpoint and the coast on a clear day

After watching trains at the station tower, head to Omonai Observatory or the Yagoshi coast. Omonai offers steps and a panorama; the Yagoshi area is known for rugged coastal scenery. Choose according to the weather and how much walking suits you.

Michi-no-Eki Shiriuchi → Omonai Observatory, or toward Matsumae-Yagoshi Prefectural Natural Park.

On windy or rainy days, or when winter roads are difficult, narrow the itinerary to the tower and local products hall.

Trips built around oysters, chives, or summer events

Pair town-center events with the station

During the spring oyster festival or summer carnival, check the venue in the town center, parking, and sales start times as well as the roadside station. Use the station for restrooms, extra shopping, and train watching on the way there or back.

Town event venue → Michi-no-Eki Shiriuchi → observation tower or bakery.

Do not plan around an event whose date has passed; check the latest town event information.

Shiriuchi food events

For the spring oyster festival, summer carnival, and chive- and oyster-related events from winter to spring, distinguish between venues in town and facilities at the roadside station.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The local products hall is a place to discover Shiriuchi ingredients

Farm vegetables, sweets made with local ingredients, sake, and processed seafood are the focus of the detour. Browse the whole selection before choosing one item to take home a taste of town, even on a short stop.

The bakery suits a flexible break more than a full restaurant meal

Freshly baked bread, eat-in seating, and soft-serve ice cream suit a day without a heavy lunch or time spent waiting for a train. Bread with chives or rice flour offers a light taste of Shiriuchi.

Rail visitors need not spend the whole wait inside the small station building

The roadside station itself is not designed for an extended stay; combine the observation tower and local products hall. If there is a long wait before the train passes, consider spending time around the nearby Seikan Tunnel entrance or at the hot spring.

Reduce coastal and viewpoint stops in rain or strong wind

Omonai Observatory has stairs, while the Yagoshi coast is affected by seaside weather. In poor weather, center the outing on the observation tower, local products hall, bakery, and hot spring.

Treat town events and the roadside station as separate stops

The oyster festival and summer carnival take place at venues in town, so use the roadside station for breaks and extra shopping on the way there or back. Follow the town's official information for dates and sales start times.
