There is a nursing room and an outdoor place to move around a little. In rough weather, focus on an indoor break.

For the next stop
Fruit picking or the Showa Shinzan area

For a short outing, head to the orchards; with half a day, continue to the Mount Usu Ropeway or Lake Toya.

Michika’s break note

Before buying fruit, plan your break first.

Before the pleasures of eating and shopping, this station gives you a chance to slow down after driving on National Route 453. Check the restrooms, rest area, and opening hours before heading to Sams, and you will have more time to choose apples and jam. Even when hurrying to Showa Shinzan, a few minutes in the Volcano Disaster Education Center can turn the next view from a simple sightseeing stop into a landscape that feels distinctly Sobetsu.

Highlights

Roadside Station Sobetsu Information Center i (Ai) brings together Sams, a farm produce shop selling Sobetsu fruit and agricultural products, tourist information, and a volcano disaster education center. On National Route 453, stop for the restrooms and a break, choose apple juice, jam, or seasonal fruit, and, if time allows, continue to Showa Shinzan, the Mount Usu Ropeway, or fruit picking. Autumn is apple season; fruit picking runs from early summer into autumn. In winter, check the shorter opening hours and Tuesday closures before planning a comfortable driving break.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Buy fruit, learn about volcanoes, and choose your next stop

The center has three main parts: the tourist information center, the Volcano Disaster Education Center, and Sams Farm Produce Shop. Instead of passing through as a rest stop alone, use the restroom and take a break, look at fruit and processed foods, then decide whether to head for Showa Shinzan, Mount Usu, Lake Toya, or an orchard. That is a good way to experience what makes this station distinctive.

02

Sobetsu fruit and processed foods lead the shopping

Sobetsu is a fruit-growing town with orchards along National Route 453. At the produce shop, look for seasonal vegetables and fruit, apple juice, jam, and wine. Shopping tends to get busier during the autumn apple season. Stopping before noon, bringing a cooler bag, and keeping your plans flexible rather than relying on one meal option can make the visit easier.

03

Plan a break around clearly listed facilities

The official guide lists approximately 78 standard-car spaces, five large-vehicle spaces, one dedicated EV-charger space, and four spaces for people with disabilities. There is a nursing room, restrooms, a free rest area, and a café corner, making a short break easier for families and long-distance drivers. In winter, Tuesday and year-end/New Year closures apply, so plan shop visits around the seasonal hours.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A break on National Route 453

Rest and shop in 30 minutes

After parking, make a quick circuit through the restroom, rest area, and Sams Farm Produce Shop, in that order. If buying fruit, consider the temperature inside your car. Juice and jam are processed options that can be easier to take home.

Parking → restrooms → rest area → Sams → departure

Winter hours are shorter, and Tuesday closures are a general guide. Plan shop visits without relying on nighttime opening.

A family drive from early summer to autumn

Spend half a day in the fruit-growing town

Check the fruit in season and road information at the station, then head for Sobetsu Fruit Village (そうべつくだもの村). Fruit picking is advertised from around early June to late October; the choices change with the season and include strawberries, cherries, grapes, prunes, and apples. Returning to the station afterward makes it easy to pick up processed foods or drinks.

Station → Sobetsu Fruit Village → station or hot spring area

Fruit picking depends on weather and how the crops are ripening. Check each orchard’s reception hours, varieties, and whether picking has ended before visiting that day.

A first sightseeing drive

See the volcanoes and Lake Toya

Learn about Mount Usu’s eruptions at the Volcano Disaster Education Center, then head to Showa Shinzan and the Mount Usu Ropeway. From the summit, views of Lake Toya, Showa Shinzan, Ginnuma Crater, and Funka Bay change markedly with the weather, so it is practical to use a clear spell first.

Station → Volcano Disaster Education Center → Showa Shinzan → Mount Usu Ropeway

Ropeway operating hours vary by season, and it also closes for winter inspections. Wind, fog, and road conditions can change the experience.

Unpredictable weather around Lake Toya

Shift toward indoor stops on a rainy day

On rainy or windy days, combine the station’s tourist information and Volcano Disaster Education Center with the Kitanoumi Yokozuna Memorial Museum. This gives you a sense of the area while reducing time outdoors. With small children, prioritize the nursing room and restrooms instead of pushing to use the outdoor plaza.

Station → Volcano Disaster Education Center → Kitanoumi Yokozuna Memorial Museum → hot spring area

The Kitanoumi museum has a winter closure period. Check its opening dates before a winter visit.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

Easy to arrange a short nursing-room and restroom break.

A nursing room has been provided since 2017. A short stop for feeding, changing, and a little shopping for caregivers may work better than a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A little change of scene in the outdoor plaza, weather permitting.

Aozora Plaza and the multipurpose plaza offer space to move around. On rainy, windy, or cold winter days, prioritize an indoor break.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine fruit, volcano exhibits, and brief outdoor play.

A stop before or after fruit picking gives children this age a clear purpose. The Volcano Disaster Education Center also introduces what they will see at Showa Shinzan.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Turn volcanoes, orchards, and a sumo museum into learning stops.

Extending the trip to the Mount Usu Ropeway and Kitanoumi Memorial Museum can connect the region’s nature and notable people, much like a school research project.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Sobetsu Apple Tour (そうべつりんごめぐり)

In 2025, the event ran from October 10 to November 16, and the second floor of the roadside station was listed as a registration point. Check the tourism association or town notices before autumn for whether it will be held in 2026 and for its dates.

Sobetsu Apple Festival (そうべつりんごまつり)

It is generally listed for the first Sunday in October each year. Dates can change with apple growth, so check the latest town and tourism association information just before an autumn visit.

Showa Shinzan International Yukigassen (Snowball Fight)

This major winter event is usually held in the Showa Shinzan area from mid to late February. If you plan to watch or expect congestion on nearby roads, also check the station’s hours and winter closures.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Visitors enjoy the view toward Mount Usu and Showa Shinzan from the second floor

The station is more than a shopping stop; it is an entry point to the town’s volcanic landscape. In good weather, take in the indoor exhibits and view before departure to give the trip toward Showa Shinzan more context.

Fruit picking varies with weather and varieties

Sobetsu Fruit Village’s season is roughly early June to late October, but strawberries, cherries, grapes, and apples each have different seasons. It is reasonable to plan separately for a day of shopping at the station and a day of entering an orchard.

In winter, check the hours and road conditions first

Winter hours are generally 9:00–17:00, with closures on Tuesdays except public holidays and over the year-end/New Year period. Routes nearby, including Orofure Pass, can have seasonal restrictions, so check road information before driving toward Noboribetsu or Kita-Yuzawa.

With children, split the break and the next destination

The nursing room, Aozora Plaza, and multipurpose plaza are helpful, but families may find it less tiring to use the station for a break and then head separately to fruit picking, the ropeway, the lakeside, or a hot spring, rather than spending a long time playing at the station alone.

Use it as a rest facility, not for an overnight stay in the car

The tourism association’s official guidance asks visitors to refrain from using public spaces such as the parking area for the purpose of overnight accommodation. For an overnight plan, arrange a hot spring inn, campground, or other lodging separately.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Hours are generally 9:00–17:30 from April 1 to November 15 and 9:00–17:00 in winter.
  • In winter, there are Tuesday closures except on public holidays and year-end/New Year closures, so check shop availability before departure.
  • Shopping tends to be busier during autumn apple season, and it is easier to choose fruit earlier in the day.
  • When buying fruit, a cooler bag and attention to the temperature inside your car make it easier to take home.
  • Views around Showa Shinzan and Mount Usu depend on the weather, so use clear spells first.
  • Guidance asks visitors not to use the parking area for overnight accommodation. Arrange lodging separately if staying overnight.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Shopping
    Sobetsu apple juice
A year-round souvenir option; brands and stock depend on the shop
  • Processed food
    Fruit jam
A standard souvenir from Sams Farm Produce Shop
  • Direct sale
    Seasonal fruit
Pair a purchase with an orchard visit from early summer to autumn
  • Break
Light meals and sweets at the café corner
Suited to a short break during opening hours
  • Souvenir
    Sobetsu apple wine
For drivers, take it home rather than drinking it here
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Buy right away

Seasonal fruit, vegetables, and apple juice

You can choose these quickly at Sams Farm Produce Shop. During the busy autumn apple season, shopping earlier is safer than dropping in during the afternoon.

Take home

Jam, apple wine, and processed foods

Processed foods can be convenient when the temperature inside the car is a concern or you do not want extra luggage before or after fruit picking.

Take a light break

Light meals and sweets at the café corner

Treat this as a short pause before continuing toward Showa Shinzan or Lake Toya rather than making a meal the main purpose of the visit.

Choose by season

Strawberries in early summer, cherries in summer, and grapes and apples in autumn

Pairing an orchard with the roadside station separates the experience of picking and eating fruit from the pleasure of buying some to take home.

During event season

Apple Tour, Apple Festival, and Sams Grand Harvest Festival

Fruit events take place across the town in autumn. Check the dates for the year you visit and allow extra time for parking and shopping.
