Michika's stopover notes

Watch meal times and sea winds to enjoy Kaminokuni at an easy pace.

Michika Hozumi sees this station as a place to arrange the restroom, a meal, local products and a short walk in a comfortable order. If you arrive at lunchtime, have tekkui on the second floor; otherwise, choose strawberry juice and shopping on the first floor. In calm, clear weather, descend toward the coast; in rough weather, drive instead to the Former Sasanami Residence or the onsen. Monju makes it easy to adjust eating, shopping and resting to the weather.

Settle in with parking and the restroom first, then choose the sea, tekkui and local products in that order to enjoy the station without rushing.
Highlights

Roadside Station Kaminokuni Monju overlooks the Sea of Japan along National Route 228. The second-floor restaurant pairs views through broad windows with tekkui tempura rice bowls and marinated tekkui rice bowls made with flounder. On the first floor, look for live abalone, scallops, shrimp, processed seafood, juice and soft-serve made with Kaminokuni strawberries, and black silica products. Allow time beyond a quick restroom stop for the sea view, a meal, local products, and a short walk to the Path of the Gods or the shore.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make the sea view the main reason to stop

Beside National Route 228, the building and parking area offer wide views of the Sea of Japan. On a clear day, look toward Okushiri Island and the coast around Esashi before heading indoors. In strong winds or winter, keep the outdoor stop short and move to the restaurant and shops.

02

Choose tekkui, shrimp or strawberries to suit the time

Gourmet Boutique Monju on the second floor generally opens 11:00–15:00, with last orders at 14:30. Kaminokuni seafood features in tekkui (flounder) tempura rice bowls, marinated tekkui rice bowls, Tekkui Delicious Legend and Ryujin Shrimp Premium Curry. If you miss restaurant hours, switch to first-floor strawberry juice, strawberry soft-serve or Fruit Pork croquettes for a satisfying break.

03

Ease a long drive with a 24-hour restroom and free dog run

The main building generally opens 9:00–17:00, but the 24-hour restroom remains available after closing. The free dog run on the sea side offers dogs a chance to stretch, even on a visit focused on the building. Open flames are prohibited on the grounds, so keep vehicle breaks and dog visits brief and follow the rules.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 20–35 minute break on National Route 228

Take a short sea-view break with strawberry juice

After parking, use the 24-hour restroom first, then check the wind and view on the sea side. Indoors, choose first-floor strawberry juice, strawberry soft-serve or a Fruit Pork croquette for a short stop that does not depend on restaurant hours.

Parking → restroom → sea view → first-floor fast food and local products → depart

The coast can be windy. Keep outdoor time short with small children or in winter.

A lunch stop en route to Esashi or Matsumae

Plan lunch around tekkui

Arrive before the 14:30 last order within the 11:00–15:00 restaurant hours, and dine by a second-floor window overlooking the Sea of Japan. Make a tekkui tempura or marinated tekkui rice bowl the main dish; if it is crowded, leave room to switch to first-floor snacks and local products.

Park → second-floor restaurant → first-floor local products shop → sea-side break

A special summer selection was announced from June 2026. Check the official menu beforehand if you want a particular dish.

A 30–60 minute walk in clear weather

Add the coast and Path of the Gods below the station

Beyond the station viewpoint, follow the path down to the shore or look toward the Path of the Gods at Omanosaki. The marine terrace and unusual coastal rocks leave a distinct impression of Kaminokuni. It also makes a short post-meal walk.

Station → sea-side viewpoint → coastal path or Path of the Gods → return to station

Watch your footing, waves, wind and sunset; do not force the walk. In rough weather, switch to the building and nearby places reached by car.

Adult trips and educational outings with primary-school children or older

Trace northern medieval history over half a day

After lunch and shopping at the station, visit the Former Sasanami Residence, Katsuyamadate Site Guidance Facility and Mount Iou. Alongside seafood, this route connects Kaminokuni's herring-fishing grounds, northern trade and medieval fortified site.

Station → Former Sasanami Residence → Katsuyamadate Site Guidance Facility → Mount Iou → Hanazawa Onsen

The former residence and guidance facility generally open from spring through autumn. In winter or around Mondays, check the town's official opening calendar.

A drive with a dog

Give dogs a short break at the sea-side dog run

Let the dog move around briefly in the free Wan-chan Hiroba dog run while you make a short stop for the restroom and local products. Check coastal wind and sun, and use it as a safe change of pace rather than a long stay.

Park → dog run → restroom → local products shop → depart

Follow the rules for leads inside and outside the dog run, taking waste away and vaccinations.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

The 24-hour restroom helps, but keep exposure to sea wind and time on outdoor steps and paths short.

Plan around main-building hours and check nursing and diaper-changing facilities on site. Wind crosses the sea side, so keep a carried child's viewing stop brief.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Strawberry soft-serve and the sea view are fun, but a short visit suits this age better than a long walk.

If the restaurant wait looks long, use the first-floor fast-food counter. Hold hands on the coastal path; in rough weather, switch to a place reached by car, such as Hanazawa Onsen.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The sea, unusual rocks, soft-serve and a short coastal walk can make a memorable stop.

For outdoor activity, add a brief walk behind the station. Without a dog, treat the dog run as a place to look at rather than a playground.

Primary-school age
★★★★☆

Adding Katsuyamadate Site and the Former Sasanami Residence connects food with history.

Talk briefly about the name tekkui, coastal landforms, herring-fishing grounds and northern medieval history. Check the guidance facility's opening season before planning a half-day route.

Adjust time by the sea

It can be windy; shorten outdoor time when needed.

Check lunch hours first

Restaurant last orders are generally at 14:30. Families should have an alternative if the wait is long.

Keep a sweet break in reserve

Strawberry juice and soft-serve work for a short break.

Do not force a coastal walk

Decide on the coastal path or Path of the Gods after checking footing, waves and sunset.

History walks suit primary-school age and up

The Former Sasanami Residence and Katsuyamadate Site add more of Kaminokuni's character.

Spaces used for events

A notice says the restaurant menu changes to a special summer selection from June 8, 2026. If dining is your main reason to visit, check the latest PDF before you go.

Official social media and notices sometimes announce stalls, flea markets, shopping raffles, food trucks and inflatable play equipment. Details can change with the weather and event date, so check shortly before visiting.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The restaurant's sea view adds to the outdoor panorama

The official site describes a panoramic Sea of Japan view through the restaurant's large windows, while travel accounts often describe a meal that feels as though it is above the sea. For views, consider the outdoor lookout and second-floor meal as separate experiences.

The name tekkui has a story of its own

The official site introduces flounder-based tekkui tempura and marinated rice bowls and explains the name's origin. On a first visit, enjoy tekkui as a word from Kaminokuni and Hiyama as well as a seafood dish.

A short first-floor break still works outside restaurant hours

The restaurant mainly serves lunch, but the first floor offers fast food such as strawberry juice, strawberry soft-serve and Fruit Pork croquettes. If arriving late in the afternoon, switch from a full meal to sweets and local products.

A shore walk adds value in clear weather

A regional travel account describes the path down to the shore behind the station and scenery of unusual rocks and pillow lava. Visitor reviews also favor the view, but wind and footing vary by day; enjoying the viewpoint alone is a sound choice.

The 24-hour restroom and dog run help on long drives

The official site lists a 24-hour restroom available after building hours, a multipurpose restroom and the free Wan-chan Hiroba dog run. On journeys linking Hakodate, Esashi and Matsumae, the station is useful even without a meal.

Choose nearby stops by their coastal and medieval history

The Hokkaido roadside-station directory and town site list the Former Sasanami Residence, Katsuyamadate Site, Mount Iou and Hanazawa Onsen among nearby sights. Begin with food and the sea at the station, then finish a half-day route with history or a bath.

On event days, allow for parking and weather as well as food and shopping

The 2026 gastronomy notice, special summer menu and summer-festival posts on official social media point to food and stall events. Such visits can last longer than a normal lunch stop, so consider parking, wind, rain and children's waiting time.
