How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
Check the bread and lunch queues before deciding

Choices include Masuya Shoten, butadon pork rice bowls, ramen and curry. If they are busy, turn to sweets or the farm-direct market.

What to buy
Beans, vegetables, dairy products and sweets

Tokachi's appeal extends beyond meat to wheat, beans, dairy products and sweets. Choosing your main take-home item first makes shopping easier.

With children
Indoor play space and Natsuzora area

Children can move around during a long drive. Use the indoor area briefly on rainy or windy days and the outdoor area when the weather is fine.

For more sweets
Walk over to Ryugetsu

Pairing the roadside station with Ryugetsu makes a natural sequence of a meal, farm-direct shopping and a confectionery factory.

Where to go next
Tokachigawa Onsen or Obihiro Racecourse

An afternoon ending at the hot springs feels different from one spent at ban'ei draft-horse racing or Tokachimura.

Michika's detour notes

Decide here what to eat in Tokachi and what to take home.

Editor Michika Chitose sees Otofuke as more than a rest stop near the interchange. With bread, butadon pork rice bowls, beans, dairy products, sweets, Ryugetsu and routes toward the hot springs, it is an entry point to Tokachi food. If you are unsure, choose what to eat first, what to take home next, and then whether to continue to the hot springs or Obihiro.

Eat

Masuya Shoten, butadon pork rice bowls, ramen, curry and sweets. Lunch need not be limited to one shop.

Buy

Beans, vegetables, dairy products and processed foods at Natsuzora Market. Add sweets from Ryugetsu.

Continue

Tokachigawa Onsen, Tokachigaoka Park or Obihiro Racecourse. Choose where to spend the afternoon.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Otofuke sits on National Route 241 near the Otofuke-Obihiro Interchange, making it easy to sample Tokachi foods in a short visit. Masuya Shoten's bread, butadon (grilled pork over rice), ramen, curry, crepes, local vegetables, beans, dairy products and sweets are gathered here; neighboring Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden is an easy addition on foot. An indoor children's play space and the Natsuzora outdoor area make this a useful break for children as well as a shopping stop. Editor Michika Chitose suggests choosing here what to eat and what to take home before heading to Obihiro or Tokachigawa Onsen.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Choose among Tokachi foods inside the station

A bakery, butadon pork rice bowls, ramen, curry, crepes, local products and direct farm sales are all together here. If you cannot settle on one lunch spot, you can switch to a snack and souvenirs.

02

Complete a sweet detour with Ryugetsu

Adjacent Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden makes it easy to add a factory tour, sweets shopping and a café visit. Bread and farm products at the roadside station pair naturally with sweets at Ryugetsu.

03

Just off the expressway, with routes toward Tokachigawa Onsen and Obihiro

Near the Otofuke-Obihiro Interchange, the station is well placed for Tokachigawa Onsen, Obihiro Racecourse and Tokachimura. Stop for lunch on arrival or pick up more supplies before leaving.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Before heading into Obihiro or Tokachigawa Onsen

Choose a Tokachi lunch soon after arrival

Stop soon after leaving the Otofuke-Obihiro Interchange and choose lunch from Masuya Shoten bread, butadon pork rice bowls, ramen and curry. Companions with different tastes can choose separately within the station, making it a useful first stop.

Otofuke-Obihiro Interchange → Michi-no-Eki Otofuke → central Obihiro or Tokachigawa Onsen.

At lunchtime on holidays, food queues and parking congestion can coincide. If you are stopping specifically for lunch, arrive a little outside the peak.

A 30-minute shopping-focused stop

A short stop for bread and sweets to take home

Choose bread at Masuya Shoten, browse beans and vegetables at Natsuzora Market, and add sweets at Ryugetsu. Even without sitting down at a restaurant, you can take home a good range of Tokachi foods.

Roadside station → Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden.

Popular products may sell out as the day goes on, so an earlier stop is safer if shopping is your priority.

Drives with toddlers through elementary-school children

Give children a break before returning for food

Let children move around briefly in the indoor play space or Natsuzora area, then return for food or farm-direct shopping. A break from adult shopping can reset the mood on a long drive.

Park → play space and outdoors → meal → farm-direct market.

On busy days, decide on toilets and a meeting point first.

Rainy days or trips with older companions

Continue to Tokachigawa Onsen for a half-day outing

Have lunch and shop at the roadside station, then head to Garden Spa Tokachigawa Onsen or Tokachigaoka Park. If the weather turns, the hot spring area offers another way to spend the half-day, including for groups of different ages.

Michi-no-Eki Otofuke → Tokachigawa Onsen area.

Check official sources for hot spring facility opening days and bathing or spa use conditions.

Adult trips and a series of food stops

Spend the rest of the day at Obihiro Racecourse and Tokachimura

Start with Tokachi foods at the roadside station, then move to Obihiro Racecourse and Tokachimura. On ban'ei racing days, food, shopping and local draft-horse culture can come together in one day.

Roadside station → Obihiro Racecourse and Tokachimura.

Race days, gate opening times and events vary by date.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short visit while checking nursing, diaper-changing and rest facilities. There is indoor space, but when crowded it helps to check stroller routes first.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The indoor children's play space makes a short change of pace easy. If the meal wait is long, fitting in play first may help.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The Natsuzora area, indoor play, sweets and bread are easy to enjoy. Add Ryugetsu's factory tour so the outing goes beyond shopping.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Food tasting, the confectionery factory and onward trips to Tokachigawa Onsen or Obihiro Racecourse broaden the outing. This age is well suited to talking about local food and culture.

A place to play

Use the indoor children's play space and Natsuzora area briefly before or after shopping.

Alternatives for lunch

If the restaurant wait is long, switch to bread, sweets or Ryugetsu.

Outdoor temperature changes

Wind, sunshine and winter cold change how Tokachi feels. Adjust your time indoors and outdoors.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

At the lunch peak, keep options beyond one restaurant

The many food choices can draw queues to particular shops at holiday lunchtime. Rather than committing only to butadon or only to bread, leave room to move to the farm-direct market, sweets or Ryugetsu.

Masuya Shoten is a way to take Tokachi wheat home

Beyond buying bread, it offers a sense of being in a wheat-growing region. Bread works as a snack before the hot springs or a park, or as a gift after returning home.

Neighboring Ryugetsu adds to the sweets outing

There are sweets at the roadside station, but adding Ryugetsu's factory tour and confectionery shop makes a particularly Otofuke-style detour. It is also an option for spreading out when busy.

With children, put play before or after shopping

The indoor children's play space and Natsuzora area let children move briefly instead of spending the whole visit shopping with adults. Then return for a meal or the market. Indoor play is especially useful in winter or rain.

Continue to Obihiro Racecourse for local horse culture as well as food

Adding ban'ei draft-horse racing and Tokachimura in the afternoon connects Tokachi food with its horse culture. Race and event days affect timing, so check the official schedule before leaving.

In winter, roads and indoor breaks matter more

Tokachi winters can feel different depending on cold and road conditions even when sunny. Keep outdoor play short and use toilets, meals, indoor play and hot springs in a practical order.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • At holiday lunchtime, food and parking can both be busy. If you want butadon or ramen in particular, avoid the peak or leave room to switch to bread, sweets or Ryugetsu.
  • The selection of popular Masuya Shoten and market products changes during the day. Stop early if shopping is your main purpose.
  • Brief play in the indoor children's space or Natsuzora area before or after shopping can make a family stop easier.
  • Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden is adjacent, so you can change the order of the two stops to suit parking and crowds at the roadside station.
  • For onward trips to Tokachigawa Onsen, Obihiro Racecourse or Tokachimura, check each destination's official opening or race schedule.
  • In winter or bad weather, plan around indoor breaks, food and the hot springs rather than the outdoor Natsuzora area. Allow extra time for road conditions.
Food

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Morning to lunchtime

Masuya Shoten bread / Natsuzora Market

Buy bread made with Tokachi wheat for a snack in the car, at a park or before the hot springs. It is worth looking before it sells out.

Baking times and sellouts vary by day.

A substantial lunch

Butadon pork rice bowls / ramen / curry

For days when you want Tokachi meat or noodles. Even if companions have different tastes, it is easy to choose within the station.

Holiday lunchtimes can be busy; leave enough time.

Sweets

Crepes / soft-serve ice cream / Ryugetsu sweets

Good for a short break after a meal. Adding Ryugetsu creates a sweet detour distinctive to Otofuke.

Take-home goods

Beans / vegetables / dairy products / processed foods

Take a taste of Tokachi's farms home from the direct-sales market. The highlights change by season, so enjoy looking beyond a fixed souvenir list.

Before or after the hot springs

Drinks / bread / sweets

Picking up a snack before going to Tokachigawa Onsen makes the time before or after bathing and walking easier.

When it is crowded

Shop at the market first / switch to sweets / spread out to Ryugetsu

If restaurant queues are long, browse the market and return later, or head toward Ryugetsu to keep the visit moving.
