Michika's Rest-stop Note

Deciding where to rest first makes it easier to expand an Akan detour.

Michika Yakumo sees this station as a place to choose the shape of a break on National Route 240. First park and find the toilets, then choose the marche or a meal; if time allows, add the hot spring or crane center. Rather than packing shopping, eating, warming up and observation into one stop, add one activity according to your companions' energy and the season.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Akan Tancho no Sato is a multipurpose roadside station: shop at Crane's Terrace and Akan Marche, rest at the Akai Beret hot spring and Restaurant Tsuru, and in winter extend your visit on foot to the Akan International Crane Center. On National Route 240 between central Kushiro, Tancho Kushiro Airport and Lake Akan Onsen, it works for a quick toilet stop or a half-day detour with bathing and crane watching.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plan shopping, dining, hot springs and crane watching in one stop

Crane's Terrace and Akan Marche form the station's center. Akai Beret is across the road, and the Akan International Crane Center is nearby. You can make it a toilet-and-shopping stop, have lunch at Restaurant Tsuru, or stay longer for winter crane watching.

02

Easy to focus on Ezo deer, Akan pork, zangi and soft serve

Visitor accounts often highlight the Akan Ezo deer burger, soft serve, zangi (Hokkaido-style fried chicken) and Akan pork dishes. For a full lunch, head to Restaurant Tsuru at Akai Beret; for a shorter stop, choose Akan Marche or a snack.

03

Winter brings cranes; summer brings camping and park golf

In winter, visitors often come to watch cranes around the crane center and feeding grounds. A camera or binoculars and warm clothing help. In snow-free seasons, the campground, RV park, park golf course and farm can turn a rest stop into a starting point for outdoor activities.

04

A flexible stop between the airport and Lake Akan

On a journey from Tancho Kushiro Airport or toward Lake Akan, you can arrange parking, toilets, shopping, a meal and a hot spring in one area. If you arrive late, check Crane's Terrace's closing time first and switch your focus to the hot spring or restaurant as their hours allow.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A stop between the airport, central Kushiro and Lake Akan

A 30-minute break on National Route 240

After parking, use the toilets first, then look for a small souvenir or easy-to-eat car snack at Akan Marche. Even without a full meal, soft serve or an Ezo deer snack offers a quick taste of Akan.

Parking → Toilets → Akan Marche → Crane's Terrace → Depart

Closing times change with the season. From October to April, plan around an approximate 17:00 closing time.

Adults wanting a more relaxed travel day

Take half a day for lunch and a hot spring

Consider Akan pork or zangi at Restaurant Tsuru, then visit the hot spring at Akai Beret. Fresh groceries take more care if bought before bathing, so you might leave souvenir shopping until the end.

Akan Marche → Restaurant Tsuru → Akai Beret hot spring → Depart

The restaurant has separate lunch and dinner hours. Arrive early enough for the lunch last order.

Photography and nature observation from December to March

Make winter crane watching the main event

Visit the Akan International Crane Center first, then warm up at the station and continue to the hot spring. More people come to observe cranes in winter, so plan parking, footing, warm clothing and photography time from the start.

Akan International Crane Center → Crane's Terrace → Akai Beret hot spring

Wild bird sightings depend on weather and time of day. Check the facility's official information for events and early openings.

Camping, RV stays, park golf and outdoor time with children

Combine summer outdoor activities around the station

In snow-free seasons, camping, the RV park or park golf can extend your stay. Shop at Akan Marche before or after check-in and finish at the hot spring, giving family members with different interests an easy meeting point.

Akan Marche → Campground or park golf → Akai Beret

Outdoor facilities feel different with seasonal opening, rain, insects and sun. Check official opening dates before a visit centered on them.

A drive from Kushiro toward Lake Akan

Rework your plan before heading to Lake Akan

As a midway stop before Lake Akan, use the toilets, eat and get tourist information here. If you have time, add the crane center; if tired, choose the hot spring; if in a hurry, just shop.

Central Kushiro or the airport → Roadside station → Lake Akan area

On National Route 240 in winter, watch for road conditions and cold after sunset. Start early if adding a long detour.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works well for a short stop for toilets, shopping and a return to the car.

If planning a longer bath or meal, check where you can breastfeed and change diapers, and plan a break in the car. In winter, keep outdoor transfers short.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Soft serve or a short walk outside can make a welcome change.

The walking distance and cold affect visits to the crane center and outdoor facilities. Having the shop or car as an alternative makes meal waits easier.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Cranes, hot springs and park golf offer clear activities to look forward to.

In winter, binoculars and warm clothing help; in summer, insect repellent and water make outdoor play easier.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Nature observation and outdoor play can fill half a day.

Add learning at the Akan International Crane Center, then extend the visit to park golf or camping in summer. The hot spring is also an option if the weather changes.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A useful stop between the airport and Lake Akan

Some travelers stop en route from Tancho Kushiro Airport toward Lake Akan, making short parking, toilet use and souvenir shopping natural choices. For a longer stay, plan the hot spring or crane center first.

Outdoor facilities take center stage in different seasons

Camping, RV stays, park golf and the farm become more useful in snow-free seasons. In summer, prepare for sun and insects; keep the hot spring or shopping as an alternative in rain.

Don't rely on a single shop or dining option

Restaurants and shops can be busy on holidays or during crane-watching season. Being ready to switch to soft serve, shopping, the crane center or the hot spring helps when companions get tired.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Snacks and soft serve may change with sellouts, season and shop conditions.
