Michika's Hokuryu notes

After the sunflowers, pause and refresh before returning to the car.

Michika Tachibana sees Sunflower Hokuryu as a place to turn a flower field visit into a chance to eat, shop and rest. In summer, walk through Sunflower Village, bathe to wash off the sweat, then choose sunflower soft serve or Kurosengoku soybean products. Outside flower season, the hot spring, restaurant and shop together on National Route 275 help you unwind during a long journey.

Rest first

On hot days, use the hot spring and rest area before meals or shopping, without rushing.

Taste Hokuryu

Look for Kurosengoku soybeans, sunflower pork and Hokuryu rice in both the restaurant and shop.

Make the onward trip easier

Knowing the parking, toilets, hours and cooling needs makes it easier to set off on the next leg.

Highlights

Roadside Station Sunflower Hokuryu sits on National Route 275 and has a hot spring and hotel. Here you will find Hokuryu Gate, guarded by two dragon figures; Sunflower Park Hokuryu Onsen; Restaurant Fusha; Hokuryu Baiten shop; and the seasonal Minoricchi farm stand. In summer, it is easy to bathe before or after visiting the Sunflower Village, then choose Kurosengoku black soybean products, sunflower pork, sunflower soft serve and Hokuryu rice. Editor Michika Tachibana recommends it as a station where you can plan how to refresh yourself after the flowers and before returning to the car.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Unwind from the heat and crowds in the hot spring after Sunflower Village

Sunflower Village is large, and summer sun can mean a long walk. The station is a few minutes away by car and offers day bathing, a sauna, a free rest area and rooms for hire, so you need not rush straight back into the car after the flower fields.

02

Make a Hokuryu lunch with Kurosengoku soybeans and sunflower pork

Restaurant Fusha offers a clear taste of local ingredients in dishes such as black curry made with Kurosengoku black soybeans, a Kurosengoku rice set and sunflower pork ramen. If you are coming for a meal, plan around its separate lunch and dinner hours.

03

Hokuryu Baiten stays open later for last minute shopping

The shop lists hours of 8:00 to 21:00 and sells sunflower oil, Kurosengoku products, Hokuryu rice, sunflower cookies and sunflower soft serve. Even on a hot spring only visit, it is an easy way to take a little of Hokuryu Town home.

04

In Minoricchi's season, look at melons and watermelons first

The Minoricchi farm stand on the grounds operates seasonally each year from May to mid-October. From July, it stocks sunflower melons, sunflower watermelons and vegetables. Decide whether to buy them early or late based on cooling needs and your journey home.

05

Parking and toilets make long drive breaks easier to plan

The free parking area has 110 spaces for cars and 16 for large vehicles, is available 24 hours a day, and has toilets. It lets you combine a meal, bath and shopping in one stop while traveling toward Sapporo, Asahikawa, Rumoi or Furano.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Sunny days from late July to mid-August

Refresh at the hot spring after walking through Sunflower Village

Sunflower Village is impressive, but plan for the heat and walking distance. After photos, the maze and sightseeing cart, drive to Hokuryu Onsen at the station. Sunflower or Kurosengoku soft serve after bathing rounds off a summer outing.

Sunflower Village → roadside station parking → hot spring → Hokuryu Baiten shop → depart

During the Sunflower Festival, the venue parking, roads and shop tend to be busy. Check the flowers and event dates, and leave enough time for a meal.

A lunch stop on National Route 275

Make Kurosengoku and sunflower pork the focus of lunch

At Restaurant Fusha, choose between black cutlet curry, Kurosengoku meat keema and sunflower pork ramen. Afterward, Kurosengoku tea or sunflower oil from the shop lets you bring Hokuryu flavors home too.

Parking → Restaurant Fusha → Hokuryu Baiten shop → Minoricchi farm stand

The restaurant opens separately for lunch and dinner. Use the listed last orders of 14:00 for lunch and 19:30 for dinner when planning.

Rainy days, winter and breaks on long drives

Take your time in the rest area on a hot spring only day

Even outside flower season, the hot spring and rest facilities are central to this station. With large indoor baths, an open air bath, sauna, free rest area and rooms for hire, you can loosen up before the next leg instead of stopping only for the toilet.

Parking → hot spring → free rest area or room for hire → shop → depart

Early morning bathing is advertised only from April through the end of October. In winter, follow the regular bathing hours and check road conditions.

Summer family drives

Add outdoor play to suit your children's energy

Take a brief break at the play equipment in front of the station. For more play, drive about 15 minutes to Urara Water Park. On very hot or rainy days, switch to Kids Square Chickuru, also about 15 minutes away. The station makes a manageable starting point for a family outing.

Roadside station → play equipment outside or Urara Water Park → optional switch to Chickuru

Water play facilities are mainly seasonal summer attractions. Check changing needs, sun exposure and closing times first.

Adult trips and camping scouting from spring to autumn

Add an outdoor meal or short walk at Konpira Park

After eating or shopping at the station, drive about five minutes to Konpira Park. It offers seasonal scenery including cherry blossoms, moss phlox, birch trees and autumn foliage, as well as camping and barbecue facilities, making it easy to pair outdoor time with a hot spring visit.

Roadside station → Konpira Park → return for the hot spring

Follow local or official notices for the campground season and rules. On rainy days, it is easier to focus on the hot spring.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Good for a nursing room, diaper changing table and a short shop break.

If using the hot spring, allow extra time to rest afterward. Keep sun exposure and walking at Sunflower Village brief.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The play equipment outside, soft serve and rest area offer easy changes of pace.

The flower maze can be tiring in the heat; go in the morning or keep the visit short and leave time to rest at the station.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The sunflower maze, sightseeing cart, outdoor play equipment and water play can suit this age.

Bring a change of clothes and drinks in summer. Switch to Chickuru on rainy or extremely hot days.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Sunflower Village, puzzle activities, park golf and the hot spring can make a full day.

Budget energy differently for a flower field walk and a day that includes park golf. The town ski area is also an option in winter.

Nursing and diapers

The official Hokkaido roadside station site lists a nursing room and diaper changing table.

Rainy day alternatives

Consider the station rest area, rooms for hire, hot spring, or Kids Square Chickuru, about 15 minutes away by car.

Summer outdoor play

Choose between Sunflower Village, Urara Water Park and park golf according to weather and operating season.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Make use of the spacious parking area

The free parking has 110 car spaces and 16 large vehicle spaces; campervan use is also listed. On busy days, favor a route close to the facility entrance.

  2. 2
    Hydrate before and after bathing

Use the water in the changing room, rest area and shop so you need not set off immediately after summer flower fields or the sauna.

  3. 3
Choose one priority: a meal or shopping

Trying to fit in the hot spring, restaurant, shop and farm stand can take a long time. Decide whether lunch or souvenirs come first based on your companions' energy.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Check the flower conditions and live video before Sunflower Village

The 2026 Sunflower Festival was listed for July 20 to August 18. The official page links to live video; checking the bloom and weather before setting out helps you time the visit.

A hot spring after the flowers is a practical way to recover in summer

The official site describes the complex, about three minutes by car from the Sunflower Festival venue, as having a hot spring, sauna, restaurant and shop. Washing off the sweat after walking is one of the station's main advantages.

Day bathing usually starts at 9:30; early morning bathing is seasonal

Day bathing runs from 9:30 to 22:00. Early morning bathing is listed from 6:00 to 9:00 from April through the end of October. You can use it differently before a morning flower visit or on the way home.

Restaurant Fusha has tatami seating suited to lunch with children

The official site lists 60 seats: 42 at tables and 18 in tatami seating, where guests sit on floor mats. A children's lunch is also listed, so families can plan around the meal rush and last order times.

Find Kurosengoku and sunflower products even on a short shop visit

Hokuryu Baiten lists sunflower soft serve, sunflower oil, Hokuryu rice, Kurosengoku black soybean products and sunflower cookies. Even without a restaurant meal, shopping lets you take a taste of Hokuryu home.

Look for summer fruit at Minoricchi, but remember its seasonal hours

The official site lists a limited season each year from May to mid-October, with melons and watermelons from July. If visiting for farm produce, check opening days and arrivals; avoid planning to arrive after closing.

Visitor reviews often remember the hot spring and distinctive exterior

Travel sites and visitor accounts repeatedly mention the entrance with two dragons, the attached hot spring and hotel, black curry and Kurosengoku dishes, and visits before or after Sunflower Village. Here the focus is on how to use the station for a break rather than its unusual appearance.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The roadside station is generally listed as open 8:00–22:00, the shop 8:00–21:00, and the restaurant for separate lunch and dinner sessions. Follow official notices for changes to individual businesses.
  • Day bathing is 9:30–22:00, with early morning bathing listed from April through the end of October. Check reception hours if visiting early.
  • A five day closure is listed for mid-November. Confirm the dates shortly beforehand in official notices and avoid closure days if visiting for bathing or food. The stamp is reportedly available even during the closure.
  • During the Sunflower Festival, the fields, venue parking, station shop and hot spring can be busier than usual. Leave breathing room between lunch and bathing.
  • Minoricchi operates seasonally. If visiting for melons, watermelons or vegetables, check open days and stock, and prepare to keep purchases cool.
  • In winter, think of the station for a hot spring break, shopping and a nearby ski area rather than flowers. Check road conditions on National Route 275 and the Fukagawa-Rumoi Expressway.
