How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

If it is clear
See Mount Yotei first

Clouds change what you can see of the mountain. Look from outside and the second-floor Free Lounge before eating or shopping.

If you want a snack
Ageimo, soft serve, or sweet-bean doughnuts

Takeout is a highlight of a break at the pass. Items can sell out and some are seasonal, so come early if you have a favorite in mind.

If you have children
Restroom, eat-in area, then Free Lounge

The station lists a face-to-face counter for young children and a lounge where children can play. These make a short break easier even when it is cold outside.

In snow, rain, or fog
Check road cameras and your next stop

Elevation and weather strongly affect Nakayama Pass. Use live cameras and road information to decide how to proceed without pushing on unnecessarily.

If heading south
Allow about 30 minutes to Rusutsu

Official access guidance puts Rusutsu Resort about 30 minutes away. This can be a useful stop before or after the amusement park or skiing.

If returning toward Sapporo
Leave time for Jozankei Onsen

You can drive down to the hot-spring town. Check each facility's hours if you plan to add a day bath or footbath.

Highlights

Boyo Nakayama is a useful place to regroup on National Route 230. Try Nakayama Pass's ageimo, battered fried potatoes on a skewer; browse Hokkaido souvenirs at Hokkaido Produce 230; and check the view of Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountains from the second-floor Free Lounge. On a clear day, see the view first. In winter or rough weather, check road information and use the restrooms first. For a family drive from Sapporo toward Rusutsu, Toya, or Niseko, food, shopping, a rest, and a decision about the road can all happen in one place.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

At the top of the pass, see the view before you eat

Nakayama Pass, at 835 m elevation, is a key point on National Route 230. In clear weather, Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountains turn a restroom break into something more. If the sky is bright when you arrive, look from outdoors or the second-floor lounge before shopping so you do not miss what makes this station special.

02

Ageimo is a reward before you reach your destination

Ageimo, the Nakayama Pass specialty of battered fried potatoes on a skewer, is the takeout counter's main attraction. The official site says it sells 300,000 skewers a year. Sweet-bean doughnuts, Nakayama Chicken, and soft-serve ice cream offer other quick snacks. Even without a full lunch, a warm bite here can make the drive more enjoyable.

03

In winter and bad weather, this rest stop matters even more

Snow and fog can change conditions markedly at Nakayama Pass. There are chain fitting and removal areas on both the Sapporo and Kimobetsu sides, and road images and an HBC information camera can help you check conditions. In winter, take time to use the restroom, get a drink, assess the road surface, and plan your next stop instead of rushing here only for ageimo.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Family drives, long journeys, tour-bus breaks

Regroup at the pass before driving from Sapporo toward Rusutsu or Toya

Coming up National Route 230 from Sapporo, Boyo Nakayama is a natural pause before the next stretch. Parking has 190 spaces for passenger cars and 12 for large vehicles. Restrooms, snacks, a shop, and views are together, so companions with different priorities can all take a break.

Sapporo area → Nakayama Pass → Boyo Nakayama → Rusutsu, Toya, or Niseko area.

At holiday lunchtimes and during tourist season, queues for ageimo, restrooms, and parking can coincide. Focus on a few stops if you need a short break.

Snacking, photos, a Hokkaido-style break

Ageimo and Mount Yotei make a worthwhile short detour

Part of the pleasure of Nakayama Pass ageimo is eating it along the way, before reaching your destination. On a clear day, a look at Mount Yotei from outside or upstairs and a warm snack can make even a short stop memorable.

Park → check the Mount Yotei view → get takeout → shop for Hokkaido souvenirs.

Cloud or fog can hide the view. When it does, focus on food, shopping, and checking the road instead.

Babies, preschoolers, winter or rainy days

With children, make an indoor break the priority

This is a station for regrouping on the road, rather than a destination for large playground equipment. With an eat-in area, a face-to-face counter for young children, and a Free Lounge where children can play, you can fit eating, sitting, and a change of scene into a short stop.

Restroom and diaper change → eat-in area or Free Lounge → takeout.

When vehicles and people are moving in and out of the parking area and building, hold children's hands and keep your route short.

Winter drives, rental cars, drivers unfamiliar with mountain passes

In winter, use it to assess the road as well as to eat

The Nakayama Pass section of National Route 230 is described as a 28.8 km stretch with a pass at 835 m elevation; snow and fog can change how you drive. Check road images, the HBC information camera, and Kita no Michi Navi, then get a drink and use the restroom before continuing.

Boyo Nakayama → check road images → descend toward Sapporo or Kimobetsu.

A live camera cannot show conditions along every part of your route. In bad weather, leave room to turn back or travel later.

Skiing, amusement park, spring skiing, family resort visits

Before or after recreation, connect to Rusutsu or Nakayama Pass Ski Area

Boyo Nakayama provides a snack and restroom break before or after spring skiing at Nakayama Pass Ski Area or a visit to the year-round Rusutsu Resort. Think of it as a final place to prepare before arriving at your activity.

Boyo Nakayama → Nakayama Pass Ski Area / Rusutsu Resort.

Ski-area operations change with weather and snow conditions. What is open at Rusutsu also varies greatly by season, so check the destination's official information.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★★☆

Information is available about a diaper-changing table, an eat-in area, and a face-to-face counter for young children. These can help before or after feeding and nursing.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

A short change of scene in the Free Lounge or another seated area may work better than outdoor play. Watch for traffic in the parking area.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Children can enjoy ageimo and soft serve, but this is not a station centered on playground equipment. Enjoy the mountain-pass break and view briefly.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

The visibility of Mount Yotei, the pass road, and winter road information can all prompt conversation, almost like a short geography lesson during the drive.

Diaper changing

A diaper-changing table is listed among the station facilities. Visit before the area gets busy if possible.

Indoor rest

Use the Free Lounge and eat-in area for a short break in winter or rain.

Outdoor play

Plan around the view and snacks rather than playground equipment.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose parking near the building

The pass parking area has frequent traffic, including tour buses. Consider the ground and weather, then keep the walk short by parking near the building.

  2. 2
Use the restroom and get a drink first

In winter or bad weather, preparing for the next stretch matters more. Checking the restroom, drinks, and road conditions before eating can make the stop calmer.

  3. 3
Plan lunch around irregular restaurant closures

Fusamaru Shokudo is generally open 11:00–15:00 but closes on irregular days. Leave the option of takeout or the shop if it is closed.

  4. 4
Do not wait indefinitely for the view

Mount Yotei is a reward on clear days. When it is hidden, the station still works for ageimo, Hokkaido souvenirs, and checking the road.

Official updates

Updates cover seasonal products, media mentions, and restaurant opening days. In July 2026, the site noted ageimo media coverage and Yubari melon soft serve.

Hokkaido Produce 230

The shop stocks products made from or associated with Hokkaido ingredients. Seasonal and limited products give you different reasons to stop at different times.

Free Lounge

A second-floor space for resting while looking toward Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountains. In good weather it is a viewpoint; in rough weather it offers an indoor break.

Road information and live cameras

Key sources for assessing seasonal conditions at Nakayama Pass. In winter, fog, or strong winds, they can matter more to your visit decision than event updates.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Ageimo alone is a reason to stop

Reviews and travel accounts repeatedly describe visitors stopping for ageimo. It is an easy snack to understand on a long drive and an easy local specialty to explain to children.

At holiday lunchtime, food and restroom demand can peak together

The station lies where traffic from Sapporo toward Rusutsu and Toya gathers, so takeout and restroom visits can coincide around lunch. Families may find it easier to use the restroom before deciding on food.

For families, it excels as a place to regroup, not a play destination

The Free Lounge, eat-in area, and young-child feeding facilities suit a short sit-down, meal, or change of scene more than a long play session.

In winter, assess the road before focusing on the destination

Nakayama Pass is an 835 m pass on National Route 230. When weather worsens, checking road images and taking a break at the station can matter more than the pleasure of eating there.

Spring skiing and summer resort trips call for different uses of the same pass

Nearby Nakayama Pass Ski Area operates for spring skiing, while Rusutsu Resort lies farther south. Depending on the season, this stop can come before snow activities, an amusement park, or a hot-spring visit.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Along National Route 230, about 60 minutes from Sapporo and 30 minutes from Rusutsu Resort. During tourist season, breaks, meals, and restroom visits can peak together.
  • Takeout and shop opening and closing times change by season. The official site lists summer 8:30–17:30 and winter 9:00–17:00.
  • The restaurant is generally open 11:00–15:00, with irregular closures. If you come for lunch, keep takeout as another option.
  • The Free Lounge is described as a place where children can spend time while visitors rest with views toward Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountains.
  • Nakayama Pass is at 835 m elevation on National Route 230. In winter or bad weather, check the HBC information camera, road-information system, and Kita no Michi Navi before continuing.
  • The view depends on weather. When the mountains are hidden, focus on ageimo, the shop, an indoor break, and road checks.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Try a pass specialty

Ageimo / sweet-bean doughnuts / Nakayama Chicken

Best for a quick taste of Nakayama Pass. The official site describes ageimo as a popular item selling 300,000 skewers a year.

Popular items may involve waits or sell out at busy times.

Add something sweet

Premium soft-serve ice cream / Yubari melon soft-serve ice cream

An easy option after a meal or mid-drive. As of July 2026, a limited-quantity Yubari melon soft serve was advertised.

Limited items vary by season and quantity; leave room to choose what is available on site.

Have a full meal

Ramen / curry / soba noodles

Fusamaru Shokudo is generally open 11:00–15:00. It suits a warm meal on a cold day or during a long drive.

The restaurant closes on irregular days. Check official opening notices if lunch is your main reason for stopping.

Buy something to take home

Hokkaido Produce 230 / Hokkaido foods, sweets, and alcoholic drinks

The shop offers Hokkaido foods and souvenirs. Even late in your trip, you can pick up snacks for the road or gifts to take home.

If someone is driving, take care with purchasing and storing alcohol. Consider the car's temperature when choosing refrigerated products.

Sit down to eat with children

Eat-in area / Free Lounge

Useful if eating in the car is awkward or you need a calmer meal with a young child. Even a short stop lets everyone change position.

When it is busy, keep the break short so others can use the space too.
