How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Reset first
Parking and 24-hour toilets

On a long Route 40 journey, even a brief reset here can make the next drive easier.

For a short stop
Pick up Bifuka flavors at the shop

Look for birch sap, tomato juice, honey, croquettes and honey soft-serve. The selection changes with season and time of day.

If you want a meal
Check restaurant hours first

The station, restaurant and hot spring do not share the same opening hours. If you miss lunchtime, have a light-meal alternative in mind.

With children
Head to Bifuka Island

Combine lawns, play equipment, water and the Sturgeon Museum to give children a change after time in the car.

When tired
Finish at Bifuka Onsen

Add a day-use bath or an overnight stay to make a northbound or southbound break more restorative.

For a seasonal outing
Camping, rail carts and wetland

Summer suits the forest park, Torokko Kingdom rail-cart rides and nature walks. In winter, allow for snowy roads and changed opening hours, and plan a shorter break.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Bifuka is an easy place to plan a break while driving from Asahikawa through Nayoro and Otoineppu toward Wakkanai. It has parking for around 200 standard cars, toilets open 24 hours, and a shop whose hours change by season. Just behind it are Bifuka Onsen, Bifuka Island Forest Park and the Bifuka Sturgeon Museum. For a short stop, try birch sap, tomato juice, croquettes or honey soft-serve ice cream; with more time, add the hot spring or park. Its strength is the reassurance of a dependable place to reset on a northern highway, rather than spectacle.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A predictable place to rest on National Route 40

Drives on either side of Bifuka can be long, so knowing where to park, use the toilet, shop and eat helps. With parking for around 200 standard cars and toilets open 24 hours, this is a reassuring stop on a northern Hokkaido drive.

02

Small-scale shopping, distinctly Bifuka

Birch sap, tomato juice, honey, croquettes, honey soft-serve and local products linked to sturgeon and caviar show the town's character. This is not a shop to linger in for hours; choosing a few things to look for makes the stop more rewarding.

03

Extend your break to the hot spring and forest

Bifuka Onsen and Bifuka Island Forest Park continue just behind the station. Ease driving stiffness in the hot spring, take children to the lawn and playground, or make a short visit to the Sturgeon Museum. It is easy to turn a break into a half-day stay.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Long drives toward Asahikawa, Nayoro, Otoineppu or Wakkanai

Make it a practical stop on a Route 40 drive

Park, then make a quick circuit of the toilets, road information and shop. As you head farther north, planning the next break matters more; getting drinks and a light snack here can make the next stretch feel easier.

On National Route 40, a little north of central Bifuka, in a handy position for entering Bifuka Island Forest Park.

Winter brings early darkness and changing road surfaces. At night, watch the large-vehicle area and entrance traffic when choosing a parking space.

Visitors who want a local flavor even on a short stop

Take a taste of Bifuka home from the shop

Options include birch sap, tomato juice, honey, caviar-related products, croquettes and honey soft-serve. Think of choosing something characteristic of Bifuka and returning to the car, rather than browsing a large market. Even a short visit can leave you with a sense of the town.

Choose among the station shop, light meals and restaurant to suit your time.

Popular snacks and seasonal products may sell out at certain times. Go earlier if you have something specific in mind.

Families, tired drivers, and breaks before or after camping

Add the hot spring and park for a half day

Bifuka Onsen and Bifuka Island Forest Park are close to the station. Move around on the lawns and playground, see the Sturgeon Museum, then finish at the hot spring. When a meal alone is not enough, you can broaden the visit without much extra travel.

Michi-no-Eki Bifuka → Bifuka Island Forest Park → Bifuka Sturgeon Museum → Bifuka Onsen.

The campground and activities operate seasonally. If you have a fixed visit date, check their official operating period and reception hours.

Families with elementary-school-age children or older, and trips focused on northern Hokkaido nature

In summer, continue to Torokko Kingdom and nature walks

Toward Niupu are Torokko Kingdom Bifuka, Matsuyama Wetland and the nature around Mount Hakodake. Use the station's toilets and get a light snack before heading into the hills to make that part of the trip easier to plan.

Michi-no-Eki Bifuka → Niupu area. Torokko Kingdom is roughly 30 minutes away by car.

Gate openings, road surfaces and weather can substantially change conditions in the hills. Save this for a day with enough time and a suitable season, rather than a casual detour.

Seto's route note

This station is easier to use if you choose your order of stops on arrival

Bifuka is less an all-in-one large station than a place to reconsider how to rest midway along Route 40. I first check where to park and find the toilets, then check the shop's hours, and finally decide whether to add the hot spring, park or Sturgeon Museum. Seeing the sequence of eating, shopping and resting makes both a short stop and a half-day visit easier to navigate.

1

10 minutes

Toilets, drinks and a light snack. Get ready for the next stretch.

2

45 minutes

Shop, a croquette or soft-serve, and a brief visit to the Sturgeon Museum.

3

Half a day

Bifuka Island, the hot spring and, in the right season, the Niupu area.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and diaper-changing table are listed, making a short stop manageable.

If going outdoors, keep it brief according to sun, insects, wind and winter cold.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The lawns and play equipment at Bifuka Island let children move after being in the car.

Adults should stay close around the water and when crossing parking areas.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A short combination of the park, snacks and Sturgeon Museum can hold their interest.

On rainy days, shift from outdoor play toward the hot spring or Sturgeon Museum.

Elementary-school age
★★★★★

The Sturgeon Museum, camping, Torokko Kingdom and nature walks can turn the station into a starting point for a full day.

Rail-cart rides and nature outings in the hills depend on seasonal operations and weather checks.

Toilets and diaper changing

Find the 24-hour toilets and family facilities first so it is easier to head into the park.

Outdoor play

Add Bifuka Island Forest Park for a change of pace on the lawns and play equipment.

Rain and cold

Switching to the hot spring or Sturgeon Museum can make a useful break even when outdoor play is difficult.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park a little away from large-vehicle movements

There is ample parking. For a calm break, watch the entrances and large vehicles before choosing a space.

  2. 2
    Toilets first, then the shop

This station works well as a practical stop on a long drive. Use the toilets and check road information before choosing drinks or snacks at the shop.

  3. 3
When especially tired, switch to the hot spring

With Bifuka Onsen nearby, you can choose a bath and rest rather than pushing through with just a meal.

  4. 4
Keep winter visits short; explore more in summer

In winter, account for the road surface and early darkness and keep the stop shorter. In summer, extend it to the park, campground, rail carts or wetland. The same station serves different kinds of visit by season.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Bifuka Island Forest Park

A place for summer outdoor activities including camping, park golf and canoeing. It is a short move from the station, so a break can become a half-day visit.

Event venues in central Bifuka

The Bifuka Furusato Summer Festival is held at the parking area in front of the gymnasium and the plaza in front of COM100, not on station grounds. Use the station as a stop before or after traveling to the town-center venue.

Niupu area

Use the station's toilets and get drinks before heading toward Torokko Kingdom, Matsuyama Wetland or Mount Hakodake.

Bifuka Onsen

A bathing option after summer outdoor play or a cold winter break. For current day-use bathing and accommodation conditions, follow official information.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A memorable exterior marks a clear stopping point

Its medieval European-style exterior stands out beside the highway and gives first-time northern Hokkaido drivers a recognizable landmark. Reviews often mention the building's exterior together with its large parking lot.

A focused shopping list suits this modest shop

Rather than expecting a large produce market, look for Bifuka products such as birch sap, honey, tomato juice, croquettes and soft-serve. Choosing quickly also helps on a long-distance drive.

Sturgeon offers a direct introduction to Bifuka

The town's caviar story may not be clear from shop products alone. With time for the Bifuka Sturgeon Museum, the shopping makes more sense and the stop gives children an easy introduction to the area.

Longer park and camping stays in summer; practical short stops in winter

Bifuka Island Forest Park's camping and activities are particularly appealing in summer. In winter, road conditions and cold favor a shorter practical break. Adjusting your planned stay by season helps make the most of the station.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The roadside station and shop list summer hours of 9:00–18:00 and winter hours of 9:00–17:30. Check especially for New Year travel, when they close for several days.
  • Toilets are available 24 hours. For early-morning or nighttime travel on Route 40, watch where you park and how large vehicles are moving, then take a short break.
  • Meals, snacks, the hot spring and campground operate under different conditions from the station itself. If visiting for a particular purpose, check current official information.
  • The Bifuka Sturgeon Museum, Bifuka Onsen and Bifuka Island Forest Park are close to the station, making it easy to extend even a short visit.
  • Torokko Kingdom, Matsuyama Wetland and Mount Hakodake toward Niupu are strongly affected by season, weather and road conditions. Allow extra time even in summer.
  • In winter, plan for snow and ice and use the station as a reliable short rest stop rather than a long stay.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat lightly

Croquettes / honey soft-serve / light meals

An easy way to add Bifuka flavor to a short break, whether you want something light before driving or children want a small sweet treat.

Light-meal availability varies by time of day and season.

Buy something to take away

Birch sap / tomato juice / honey / locally processed products

Choose one reminder of Bifuka instead of planning a large shopping trip. These work as a drink for the car or lodging, or as gifts for home.

Farm produce and processed goods change with season and stock.

Get to know the town's character

Sturgeon / caviar-related products

Bifuka is known for sturgeon farming and caviar. If time allows, visit the Bifuka Sturgeon Museum as well as the shop to connect the products to their local story.

Some products are expensive, so check your budget if shopping for gifts.

Take a proper rest

Restaurant / Bifuka Onsen

Adding a meal and a bath makes this a substantial pause in a long journey and can ease the drive later in the day.

The restaurant and hot spring have different hours from the station shop.

When the timing does not work

Drinks / small gifts / switch to the hot spring or park

If you arrive at the lunch rush or near closing, consider drinks or gifts from the shop before switching to the hot spring or park, instead of relying on a meal alone.

The shop closes earlier on winter evenings, so decide with your arrival time in mind.
