Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Eat first
Start with a pork or seafood rice bowl

For a substantial lunch, try Kono Butadon or Donburi no Suke. If they are busy, switch to ramen, Koipan or sweets.

For shopping
Find Shiranuka specialties at Koitoi Market

Look beyond seafood for Tantaka Ramune soda, milk jam, venison, shishamo smelt, Yanagi octopus and seasonal vegetables.

With children
From Kokko Park to the sea

Children can use the large slide and net play equipment. On clear days, make a brief trip to Koitoi Beach and use the foot-washing area.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shiranuka Koitoi is a seaside roadside station on National Route 38 that relocated and reopened in April 2025. For food, choose an Akan pork butadon (pork rice bowl), seafood rice bowl, Sapporo-style miso ramen, or breads and sweets featuring Shiranuka ingredients. At Koitoi Market, browse Tantaka Ramune soda, Rakukeisha milk jam, venison, shishamo smelt and Yanagi octopus. If you are in a hurry, make a brief stop at the main building and farm shop. With more time, add the second-floor viewing areas, Kokko Park, Koitoi Beach, the sauna or coin-operated showers: a break on the way toward Kushiro becomes a short seaside outing.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Food choices span Shiranuka's sea, hills and fields

Try Akan pork at Kono Butadon, seafood rice bowls at Donburi no Suke, miso ramen at Horyu, or heart-shaped and seasonal breads at Koipan. You need not settle on one dining style: there are choices for lunch, a snack, sweets or takeaway.

02

See the sea after your meal

Views toward Koitoi Beach open up from the Azumashi Living lounge and Kokko Park inside, the indoor and outdoor second-floor viewing areas, and the outdoor terrace. Even a few minutes looking at the sea after eating makes a drive on Route 38 feel like a proper break.

03

Many ways to refresh yourself on a road trip

Facilities include 24-hour toilets, coin-operated showers and laundry, an RV park, a sea-view sauna and a dog run. Before heading toward Kushiro or into Shiranuka, you can rest, sort out your belongings and plan a stop with your dog.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 45–70-minute meal break

Stop for lunch on National Route 38

After parking, use the toilet first, then compare pork bowls, seafood bowls, ramen and bread in the food court. Companions with different tastes can eat in the same building. Afterwards, choose drinks or souvenirs at Koitoi Market before setting off.

Parking lot → 24-hour toilets → dining area → Koitoi Market → departure

Each food outlet has its own regular closing day, including Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Monday. Check official information beforehand if you have a particular shop in mind.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Let children recharge before driving on

Break up the drive with indoor play at Kokko Park, then make a short visit to the viewing area or beach if the weather is clear. Sand-play kits can be borrowed, and a foot-washing area helps with cleanup before returning to the car.

Toilets and nursing room → Kokko Park → snack or bread → viewing area or Koitoi Beach

Wind and temperature change how the beach feels. Keep the outing short; focus on indoor spaces on cold or rainy days.

RV travelers, long-distance drivers and visitors with dogs

Refresh your road trip with a sea view

On a day using the RV park, combine the sauna, coin-operated showers and laundry after check-in to make time in the vehicle more comfortable. Visitors with dogs can use the dog run and sea air; plan ahead for the times when dogs cannot enter the building.

General information desk → RV park or dog run → sauna and showers → shop for dinner at the farm shop

The RV park is paid and requires a reservation. Restrictions apply to open flames, generators, tents and use outside your assigned space. Dogs may not enter the building.

An adult detour or a rainy-day alternative

Extend the stop into half a day of Shiranuka culture and nature

After lunch and shopping at the station, visit Shiranuka Ainu Museum Pokoro or Ureshipa Chise. On a clear day, add Koitoi Nature Observation Park or Misaki no Mori Higashiyama Park to connect the seaside with wetlands and local culture.

Station → Shiranuka Ainu Museum Pokoro → Koitoi Nature Observation Park or Misaki no Mori Higashiyama Park

Opening days, seasons and weather affect cultural facilities and parks. Favor indoor exhibits in rain or strong winds.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★★☆

A nursing room, diaper-changing station and children's toilets make it useful for regrouping during a long drive.

Keep meals and shopping brief; take care of nursing, diapers and a quick snack for the adults first.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Kokko Park's area for younger children, bread and sweets are convenient.

If visiting the beach, check the wind and sand and keep the outing short. The foot-washing area helps before returning to the car.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The large slide, net play equipment and magnetic toys offer room to move.

Play can fill the wait for food, but adult supervision is still needed.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Add the beach, views, trying different foods and Koitoi Nature Observation Park for variety.

For a cultural outing, continue to Shiranuka Ainu Museum Pokoro to learn more about the local area.

Supervise children at Kokko Park

Watch for items with strings and contact with other children when busy; use the space for a short play break while waiting for food.

Decide on the beach by wind and temperature

The sea breeze can be cold even in sunshine. Bring an extra layer and be ready for sand.

Nursing room and diaper facilities available

The baby area, children's toilets and accessible toilet help families get ready during a long drive.

With dogs, focus on outdoor areas

The dog run has separate areas for small dogs and medium or large dogs. It closes in winter, and dogs cannot enter the building.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park and use the toilet first

There are 169 standard-car spaces and 25 large-vehicle spaces. Use the 24-hour toilets and road information monitors to prepare for the next leg.

  2. 2
Choose a place to sit before choosing food

Look at Azumashi Living or the terrace first, then choose a rice bowl, ramen or bread. This helps companions stay together when busy.

  3. 3
Add a short time to see the sea

The second-floor viewing area or outdoor terrace offers views of Koitoi Beach with less walking. On windy days, the indoor area is enough.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Event square

This space hosts outdoor events. Seasonal programs, food trucks and hands-on events can make a visit longer than usual.

Azumashi Living

The main indoor space for eating and resting also has a roadside-station piano. It offers a place to spend time regardless of weather.

Kokko Park

An indoor space for everyday play and children's events. Families can easily combine it with a meal.

Outdoor terrace and viewing area

Good for a post-meal break, photos and sea air on clear days. In strong wind, you can return to the indoor viewing area.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Use it as a seaside rest complex, beyond a traditional local-products hall

Since relocating in 2025, it has brought dining, direct sales, views, Kokko Park, a sauna, showers and an RV park together. Even on a short stop, leave time to see the sea to make it more than a toilet break.

Plan around each shop's closing day and have a second choice

Kono Butadon, Horyu and Donburi no Suke close on different days. If stopping here for lunch, keep pork bowls, seafood, ramen, bread and takeaway in mind as alternatives.

With children, combine indoor play and a short beach visit

Kokko Park gives children a chance to move while waiting for food; on clear days, continue to Koitoi Beach or the viewing area. Beach winds can be strong, so think of it as a short change of scene rather than a long outdoor play session.

Look beyond seafood when shopping

Alongside seafood, Shiranuka is known for shiso, dairy products, venison, lamb and seasonal vegetables. At Koitoi Market, choose anything from light souvenirs such as Tantaka Ramune soda or milk jam to ingredients for after you get home.

For overnight vehicle stays and long drives, make use of the facilities

The RV park, 24-hour toilets, coin-operated showers, laundry and sauna are at one station, so you can prepare for the next day's drive as well as stay overnight. Check reservations and the rules on flames, noise and pets beforehand.

In rain or strong wind, choose indoor views and cultural sites

Weather changes the experience at this seaside station. If going outside is difficult, use Azumashi Living, Kokko Park and the indoor viewing area, then visit Shiranuka Ainu Museum Pokoro for a day rooted in the area.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A substantial lunch

Akan pork butadon (pork rice bowl), seafood bowls, Sapporo-style miso ramen

On a drive that spans lunchtime, companions can choose different dishes. Even if you set out for pork bowls, seafood or ramen remain options.

Check official information for each food outlet's closing day and last-order time.

A quick bite

Koipan bread, takeaway and sweets

If you cannot sit for long or children cannot wait, choose bread or takeaway and rest in Azumashi Living or on the outdoor terrace.

For after you get home

Seafood, venison and vegetables from Koitoi Market

When choosing shishamo smelt, Yanagi octopus, salmon, whelks or local vegetables, consider cooling and your travel time home. Shipping service information is also available.

Distinctly Shiranuka souvenirs

Tantaka Ramune soda, Rakukeisha milk jam, cheese and lamb

Bring home more than seafood: shiso, dairy products, venison and lamb show the range of Shiranuka food. Some suit tasting side by side or giving as small gifts.

After the sauna

Cold drinks, bread and a light rice bowl

On a day using the sauna or showers, a drink and light food from the farm shop can be a good alternative to a heavy meal.

Sauna reception hours and crowding vary. Check the news section if bathing is the main purpose of your visit.
